Editing Alpha Channel

Do any of you have suggestions for editing a model's alpha channel? My main concern is no being able to use layers for decals. Since many of the texture placement, such as roadnames, are often hit-or-miss, layers would make things much easier.

Maybe you have other editing suggestions or tutorials.

Thanks,
Harry

If you are using Pain.Net you can edit the alpha just like the base layer. Just send it from DXTBmp to the editor and do whatever you want with it and then save and import it back into DXTBmp before you save the main texture back to dds.

I use DXTBmp and Photoshop and it does not seem to let me create new layers.

When DXTBmp sends the alpha to Photoshop, the layer is listed as an "Index" layer. Photoshop will not let me create a new layer on the "Index" layer.

In Photoshop you can change the index layer to a background layer which then can be changed to a normal layer by using the Image/Mode menu, select RGB, when "background" double click the layer and select OK and you should have a workable layer.

Thanks RailWanderer. I'll give that a try.
