Curiosity Abounds

Unread postby hobo1960 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 3:29 pm

Gentlmen,

I'm curious about the possibilities of using a model created and made available from the many 3D Modelling resources on the web.

Would it be possible to use such a model in TS?

For example, I found the following model for sale:

https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/vehicle/train/steam-locomotive-949ae912-e5ff-4330-8092-fd061169d58b

Could this model actually be imported in to the game?

I'd appreciate insights ...

Just make sure the models are not copyrighted by the author.

Some of the elite few who have actually made working locomotives for the game can chime in here, but I believe many of the animations have to be done in the modeling program, so buying a static model may not be as much of a 'leg up' on getting a unit in game as it may appear.

As it's a single obj file, it would be quite difficult to separate out all the moving parts (wheels, rods, etc.), with the proper centre coordinates and orientations, so that they could be animated. Plus you'd have to texture it with the correct shaders. There'd also be the cab interior to make, with all the controls and gauges. Then there's the job of adding particle effects, sounds, physics, scripting and lighting. Even so, it might save you some time compared to building the model from scratch.
