I just did a series of photo reskins of JRSX Refridgerators. The reskins look good except the model in RW is much brighter than the TgPcDx files were. How do I darken the graphic files and how do I know how much to darken them?

If you are using Gimp or PS, add a layer mask that is a greyscale copy of the main layer before saving it. It cuts the brightness by a third and reduces the glossy look.

Reduce the alpha channel a ton; the specular map ( at it's basics ) adds environmental light to the texture. You can't get rid of it entirely unless the texture is covered in mud, but a great many textures have way too much specular.
Just play with brightness & contrast also ( and/or hue/saturation/lumi ) - if you're using photoshop you can use adjustment layers until you're happy and you won't irreversably change the original texture. As a rule of thumb most of the time I find if it seems right in photoshop, it's 25% too bright, but that depends on the texture itself.
