What happens in this game if your loco is an oil burner?

What happens in this game if your steam locomotive is an oil burner?
Do you load Diesel into the tender?
Does the game even support that?

The FEF-3 is an oil burner and seems very realistic in that area. As always the quality of locos depends on the skill and dedication of the developer. Not all locos are designed by Dovetail. The FEF-3 for example is designed by Smokebox and simply published by Dovetail. Though the Railworks engine is old and has definite limitations for developers many have scripted around these limitations to simulate complex systems.

If you want to know more about how the FEF-3 handles simulating an oil burner then you can find the manual here: http://train-simulator.com/support-asse ... Manual.pdf

Technically I guess even the GTEL is an oil burner, so it very much depends on the loco simulated. The Southern Pacific Cab Forward is also a traditional oil burner steam loco, but is much older and simpler than the FEF-3. You can find the manual here: http://train-simulator.com/support-asse ... Manual.pdf

Hope this helps.

There was discussion a couple months ago about what FEF-3 used as fuel.
The answer was coal. This means that to fuel your FEF-3 you need to go to an (active) coal tower and that it will not work in a diesel oil refuel point.

Smokebox has managed all that, thanks to its advanced scripting.

However when you talk about the Challenger or other steam locomotives that have oil tenders in TS2016, those are only visual (and sometimes audio) goodies that enrich the game, but you still open the firebox and press R to shovel coal.

Oil burning was never available in MSTS either, another proof that the full steam core was imported from there by Kuju, with very few modifications. **!!bang!!**

What we really need is for someone to make a coaling stage that, visually, looks like a fuel truck/bowser.

That would be quite easy. Taking an existing fuel oil model and change the properties, though in most cases steam locos oil fueling look different from diesel points.

You mentioned at that time that you had decided to leave the FEF-3 as a coal engine to fuel from coal towers. That suggested that you could have scripted the loco to fuel from oil fueling points (or maybe from both, I dare to say). !!howdy!!

It doesn't work that way - steam locos in TS must carry coal for fuel, there's no other choice, and they have to refuel from what we the game thinks is a coaling tower.

My ModelFu is weak and I've never done it for RW, only Trainz and Kerbal Space Program, buuuuut... would anyone have a prototype picture of what SP used to fuel these beasties?

EDIT: Here's a coaling tower I made for Trainz - right before I decided.... well.... to end that relationship. !*hp*!

SP hooked up a big hose and turned on the pump. There were very few coal burners in their fleet.

This seems like a good candidate, even tho it seems to have been on an SP owned narrow gauge line.

All this complicated discussion and the answer is so simple. Image
If your loco is a oil burner... Image
You have to stop every now and then and add a quart. Image

Based on the previous gas turbine shot, the stand pipe in the tender is water, and right next to it is the oil stand pipe.

Yep. Also something to note is both of these photos are in Cheyenne, and feature the same oil facilities.
