Creating Dirt Texture!!! Please help

Unread postby aksingha » Wed Dec 17, 2014 3:11 pm

Hi,
I have finished unwrapping my model and have textured some parts. But i want to get a little dusty texture on the bogies/trucks, a weathered look. I am not good at photoshop and i searched on youtube but couldn't find any appropriate tutorial. Can anyone please provide a link of tutorial if you know of any.
I am trying to achieve something like this-

I use GIMP when I am doing weathering. It has a spray nozzle that you can adjust the % and the colors to anything you want, however it is truly art. You just have to mess with it until you get the look you want.

Here's a really simple weathering method:

1: Find a decent photo of stained concrete (water stains, rust stains, etc.), but don't use areas that have seams and/or cracks.
2: Select and copy a section of the photo you find interesting - the dirtier the better.
3: Paste the copy to a new layer of you texture.
4: Set the layer properties to Soft Light with an opacity of 20~50.

Done!

An example is my ScaleRail concrete track. I used a photo of a rust-stained seaside dock to give a realistic grimy look to the ties.

Hint: You can use two or three photos with varying degrees of grime, and playing with the opacity settings of these layers should yield neat results. :D
Cheers!
