You can edit the tgpcx files that contain the numbers just like you reskin the loco body. They use a combination of paint textures and the number is on an alpha channel. Search this forum for more info.

Is the auto number in the wrong place or is it just because it's the wrong number?

In wrong place. #42 is numbered in a different spot.

The best way to do this is to make the default numbers invisible and then put them on by hand thru your paint program since all you're trying to do is #42. Change to dcvs to just one number like 000 and then you only have to doctor one number.

Yes, you have to edit the engine's numbers.dcsv file.
