I use Paint Shop Pro and sometimes Gimp. I think it has more to do with using DXTBmp properly. I use RSBin Tool to convert to dds and back. Rarely use RWTools for paint work. Hope that helps.
1. Open file with RSBin Tool
2. Export dds
3. Open dds with DXTBmp
4. Export main file to PSP and edit then export the alpha to PSP edit and save. DXT will show both the main texture and the alpha at the same time in two windows for editing.
5. Import saved dds back into RSBin Tool. Save.

I am sure there is just something wrong with my technique. I even downloaded from Adobe a full blown version of CS2 Photoshop instead of the Elements I have been using. I will have another bash tomorrow using your preferred method and see. There is much I would like to do...

!*cheers*! - it was beer o'clock some time ago and I am now running late *!lol!*

*!!thnx!!* for your patience...

paint.net works well for this kind of stuff also.

Another 4 hour stint this morning - it all seems relatively simple, right up to the point where it doesn't work !*roll-laugh*!

Export, edit and all works (or seems to) fine. It is the re-importing where it seems to fall down. I have tried both methods (RSBinTool & RWTools) and I get the same result in both

Here is DXTBmp after edit and update - the reworked image is fine, as is the alpha and the transparency shows exactly as it should; ("New Haven" in NH font on trans background)

Yet when reconverted and imported, all I get is the image, no alpha. **!!bang!!** **!!bang!!** **!!bang!!**

I am sure it is something simple, but after nearly 20 hours this past week, even the simple are evading me !*hp*!

!*cheers*!

Make sure to save as DXT3 not DXT3 no alpha and that MipMaps is checked.

Also, once you export the DDS texture, you have to convert it back to a TGPCX file. RW Tools keeps the DDS files in a subdirectory named TempDDS.

I hope this thread is of some use to others out there *!!wink!!*

I wont get another opportunity to have a look at this now till Wednesday. Having done this more than 20 times by now, I must not be facing the right way or have the right colour shirt on or something *!lol!* It looks so straight forward...

Thanks for all the help...

*!!thnx!!* for all the patience. Plan to weather the text a little, but that is an exercise for another day (Wed maybe *!lol!* )

Now need to work on the loco markings and fonts. Not sure about those yet...

!*cheers*!

ps: I know they didn't run dog house tenders, its just a texture test vehicle
