Clinchfield Challengers

Unread postby ozinoz » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:46 pm

I have just started an external training course on Photoshop to hopefully get a better handle on re-skinning (layers, masks etc), with the ultimate aim being a bash to turn the UP Challengers into a Clinchfield Challenger (to look more at home on Tori's wonderful COA route). The problem is I am struggling to find any colour pics of an actual Clinchfield challenger. Some B&W's around but that is about it. There are a few of 3985 deputising as one some years back, but that is about it. I have the colour spec for Clinchfield Grey (if it was grey), just need to know about the colour and size of the Roman tender font. Not sure about getting the UP shield of the smokebox, will just have to see...

Cheers

Yes, Yes, Yes, Cool, Cool, Cool!!!! Congrats on the undertaking; I'm sure it won't be easy. Once you're done, you might want to try a WM skin; they used these also and both lines ended up being part of Chessie System.

IIRC, the letter color was CRR Yellow or a variation thereof.

You could also do a skin for the railroad where Clinchfield go their ALCO's from...

Grant its part of the model. The best you can do is try to blend the colors to make it not stand out as it does now. It uses the new textures like the Sherman Hill stuff. If you need help let me know.

Cheers, thanks for the offer - have long wanted to try and give back to the RW community. Just hope I get the education I need to get this done. Will try and have a look at the Western Maryland ones too. It doesn't look hard, he said ignorantly, but these things are often the hardest. Not sure how I tackle the WM tender emblem, but will ask when I get there... The WM ones look quite interesting, sort of very similar to the Pennsy K4 colour scheme - black with red accents. Not sure of the timing, it wont be too soon as I have only just started the training school, which wont finish till the end of May. Just need to try and scare up some source materials - the closest colour ones I have found so far are some Lionel model pics *!lol!*

Did Roads add their own emblem in the same place as the UP? If so then we can add a child object over the UP shield.

The Clinchfield ones had a rectangular plate in the same place as the UP shield which carried the loco number. Is it possible to create a child object for a model you are not distributing, only a repaint? Not sure how this "child" business actually works. The Western Maryland M2's also appear just to have a loco number plate in the middle of the smokebox and appear to have been black, with just a graphite silver smokebox front, red cab roof and red tender top around the water filler.

Yes you can. MadMike and I super detail our diesels this way. Send me some pictures (as many as you can find) and I will see what I can do for you.

Hi Marc...
many thanks - found your colour guide yesterday and tried to print it off to have as a reference guide - FAIL *!embar*! Got the text alright, but not the colours, but at least I have the RGB codes so it wasnt a total fail :)

(also found the weathering guide - for MSTS I know, but interesting)

6 locomotives of identical design of the Union Pacific Class 4664-2/3 were leased as #3800-3805 for the Denver and Rio Grande Western in 1943, which returned them in 1946. At this point they went to the Clinchfield as E-3 (670-675) and retired in 1953. You can see the square plate here too...

I'll see what I can do. Is it OK if the numbers are static?

The UP Challengers have their numbers on the smokebox shield, so I imagined a plaque with those fields on it, (for both WM & CL) but then again, I know very little about how the entire process actually works. Which ever way is going to be easiest while I still have the training wheels on :D I am going to need to adjust the bell number boards, at least for the CL to remove a digit too...

I will need to load up the model and take a look. If UP had both shield and numbers then it may look dumb to make a number board to cover both.
