Can GMAX be used to create engines?

Unread postby TBryson2 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 12:31 pm

Hello, I currently do not have "Railworks" nor have I experienced it but have been told it is an excellent simulator. I do currenly have Trainz 04 through 12 and have created several steam locomotives for that platform.

Is it possible to use Gmax to create steam engines for the Railworks platform and if so, can someone point me in the right direction for tutorals or instruction?

Engines I have created are:
The General, (Museum and Civil War versions), The Texas, The Yonah, The J.W. Bowker and the I.E. James.

My engines are fully functional and as close to historically correct as possible. I am very proud of my work. I will supply images upon request.

IF my engines can be converted to use in Railworks, I may consider doing so. A lot would depend on just how much work is involved. I created my engines, but others created script files that enable the bell to work, front couplers and steam effects. Others assisted in creating engine specifications which actually bring them to life. I would have to create those from scratch.

At this time, I'm just "fishing". IF I get a positive answer, I may (or may not) tackle it in the near future.

What Terry is really wondering is how long, how involved and what is the learning curve to get a gmax mesh into RW. I have been encouraging him for over a year to move to RW. His locomotives are not just good, they are extraordinary. He mentioned he has not yet purchased RW ,he is trying to get an idea what the community is like, and has just one response so far. There is an extreme lack of early steam, heck steam in general in RW. So I am sure any further info would be appreciated.

The reply is encouraging, but I need to see what is involved. Has anyone else done this? I cannot simply assume that it can be done, or done easily. If there is some guidance that I can look at that someone else has posted then it woud go a long way to helping me make a decision.

also, are there any tutorals on how to create an engine for RW? This may help decide. I can find all kinds of tutorals for creating items in Gmax for Trainz and Flight Simulator.

"Mdurdan", thanks for the offer, which programs are you talking about? I may already have them.

For a tutorial on how to make an engine you should read through this thread:

It might be possible to get a engine created in Gmax over to RW. I heard once that there's supposed to be a way to import a Gmax model into 3D Crafter or Blender. But I never found it, but if that's true you will most likely need 3D Crafter Pro.

Blender , 3D Crafter or 3ds Max are the only softwares with export capabilities ... Read this link for info on how to export from Gmax to either .3ds or the better option for you wavefront .obj format . The other option not shown is BoBos "back from 5 " maxscript ,, anyhow see here for what you need >>>>----->> http://www.katsbits.com/tutorials/gmax/ ... to-max.php .
