Child Decal Usable on GP38-2 and GP40-2LW

Unread postby PullmanCar » Sun Apr 07, 2024 5:33 pm

Hello,

I am hopeful someone might know of an existing child-object decal, that could be placed on the cabsides of the NS High Hood GP38-2 and CN GP40-2LW, in order to allow cabside numbering and logos. I previously painted directly onto the side of the GP38-2 as a stop-gap, but it looks quite poor, and I would desire something better. The GP40-2LW shares one side, so this is not even an option.

Just a straight rectangle that could be applied to either side with the Tennessee, Alabama, & Georgia Railway style lettering and logo painted on, nice and crisp, would be splendid. Does anyone know of an existing assets, or reskins, that make use of such?

Which models are you referring to specifically? Are they the large template? If not a alternative might be to make them 4096x4096 so the cab side area will be larger.

If that doesn't work I can make you a decal.

The 4096x4096 regrettably does not solve the issue of there only being one side of the hood on the GP40, so the text would appear mirrored on one side. Thank you for the suggestion however.

I have everything sorted with decals for the cabside name and number, but they are a set distance apart, and for the higher up cabside logo, this causes the second logo (for the other side) to be inside the cab, instead of on the side.

5086 and TAG 80 are the only high hood units with the cabside logo, it is a bit of a nuanced issue. The other units affected are the low-nose GP38-2 from N-Line (mirrored battery box/lower cabside) and the ex-CN GP40 Widecabs (mirrored cabside and battery box-entire side of cab)(both KTR blue and real life WAMX black and yellow require child decal) suffer from the mirrored cab, and therefore even at 4096 there is still the mirroring issue.

The other GP38-2s (High Hood, also from DTG>N-Line) have the number on the cabside, Southern Ry style.

Thank you very much for the offer, Buzz. I would be glad to send you the textures in question, although I can certainly texture the individual variants for TAG, KTR, WAMX, etc; as long as there is a rectangular basis from which to work from.

I was hoping there was an existing "Geep" or SD standard cab decal set that could be re-textured, but the only ones I have or know of are for covered-wagons, and feature both sides, which are a different width, therefore not useable. A single sided decal would have solved that, but the ones I have are all double-sided, with one decal for both sides.

This shows how thick I am:
I just realised I could change axis that corresponds to the width in the matrix, and make the battery box decals work. This should work, should it not? X axis would make it wider, but since decals are clear, it would work fine, just as one can stretch the width or height of a decal, with the Y and Z axis, should it not?

My apologies for bothering everyone, if this does work. I shall give it a try this afternoon or evening (if the weather cooperates it might be steam engine work time this afternoon).

I agree, not how thick you are but your analysis of what you can do to get that to fit properly.

You cannot scale (stretch) childs, though it is possible with scenery assets in the world editor (route editor).
This is due to the fact that in a scenery blueprint of a route (in RailWorks\Content\Routes\000-long-number-2024\Scenery\*.bin )
there is an additional entry for scaling, which is missing in blueprints for assets.
The most you can achieve by manipulating the entries in the matrix is a distortion, but not an enlargement or reduction.
You can only usefully rotate and move children with the matrix anyway.

I just wanted to say there has been success with this on the E units, GP30, GP35, GP38, GP38-2, GP40-2, GP40-2LW, and I am sure on more to come. (I have never shown my actual TAG 80 here, and I plan to do a TAG 50 (GP18) from the new Saluda GP18).
