Groups Not Showing Correct Names In 3DC

Unread postby TheKman » Mon Mar 18, 2019 5:56 pm

Well...I'm back.

My Model has 8 groups. MAIN, BOGIE1, BOGIE2, COUPLERS, WHEELS11, WHEELS12, WHEELS21 WHEELS22.

It's a Sketchup model imported in 3DC.

After the import, on the far right box, the above 8 names don't show after I click on a cube.

Instead I have 180 cubes named "group".

When I click on the "+" key, I get stuff named mesh followed by a number.

I did this all correct last week and now I suffer from CRS!! And I didn't save that test model to fall back to see how I set it up!! (Yeah, I know, STUPID IS STUPID DOES)

So what am I doing wrong?

Groups Not Showing Correct Names In 3DC

Hi,
Exporting the mesh from one 3D Package to another breaks the models sometimes.
When first time I exported a LHB Coach from 3DS Max to Blender, it broked the animations and scaling badly.
In you case I see that the Mesh name is broken.
This is a basic sketchup problem as when I used Sketchup many years ago and tried exporting from Sketchup to Blender, it broked all everything.
The parts were Cube.001 Cube.002 and so on.
For you problem you need to rename the mesh again and save it in 3DCafter.
The Golden Rule is to make your all Models in a single programe either Blender or 3DC as it preserves the integrity of the mesh.

Simple fix to your issue.

I suppose you're exporting as .3ds from sketchup, left of the Export button is a Options tab. Click that and it will bring up all sorts of export options for the specific file type. What you want to do is to select "Single object" in the first drop down list of options.

Group naming will not be exported so you'll have to rename each part of your model individually in 3DC. Keep in mind that by selecting "Single object", any current groups or components in your model (within sketchup) will be disregarded on export and you will end up with one single mesh file on import in 3DC.

A big thanks. That made a huge difference. Another hurdle cleared.
