That's all very well if someone's made the alpha channel by cloning a colour channel, but I really wouldn't rely on that happening ( especially if someone's taken the time to paint it properly ).
The other way would be to find paint with the least logos and colours, patch over any existing logos, and desaturate it/use a black + white filter. Sometimes you might want to copy a piece of a different livery ( if it's got more visible detail, or if it's a blank spot where your starter has a logo ), desaturate that and then use that as a patch too. At the end of it all, set your new layer to "multiply", and you can fill blocks in in the layer underneath.
