What programs are recommended

Unread postby CSX5202 » Fri Jun 12, 2015 9:37 pm

Well, I'm just wondering what the general consensus is about what program to use to model, and what program to use to repaint. And if possible, could somebody point me in the right direction in terms of tutorials? I'm going to try my hand at modeling.

The modeling program I use is 3D Crafter Pro.

You should try Blender. Is freeware and extremely pro.

For repainting I use Photoshop (Paintshop Pro is good too), RSBin Tool, DXTBmp, and RW Tools. I struggled at first but stayed with it and really enjoy my contributions to the hobby.

There also is an open source alternative for Photoshop, search for GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). Like Photoshop, it has a fairly steep initial learning curve, but you can do a lot with it. There are also many tutorials for it (same as for Blender).

I recommend that if you go the Adobe route, don't bother with the full blown (expensive) Photoshop. Get Photoshop Elements, around $75 from Costco or online (and sometimes cheaper with promotions). It will absolutely give you everything you need, including Alpha channel, and with the NVIDIA plugs, handles DDS files like a charm.

Photoshop CS2 is free. This is not Elements, not a demo, not a trial version.

Errrr . . . sort of . . . and very old!

It's "legal" to download, not "legal" to use without a license.

So if you drop the word legal . . . up to you!

Technically, maybe, but Adobe is not removing the download link, a clear message that they don't care.
Also, CS2 is more than enough for TS2015 I think.
