[QUESTION] Wreckage as Child Objects?

Unread postby Noel » Fri Dec 26, 2014 1:46 am

Hey everyone.

I have a quick question. As some of you may know, the VRC GP40s use scripting to add child objects to make different versions of the locomotives. I have torn myself apart thinking on the possibilities of using child objects.
For example, the lead locomotive in Runaway Train (1987) careened through the end of a work train, and thus became wrecked. As seen here in these two pictures:

What I'm asking is, if someone made the wreckage in Blender or another 3D Modeling program, as a scenery object, would it be possible to add it as a child object onto one of the VRC GP40s, or another locomotive?

The reason I ask is because I thought it would add some interesting approaches on scenarios, such as decoration, or actually driving the "Runaway" train..

Thanks,
Noel.

I don't think this would work out. Child objects add, not subtract from a model. So if you tried to do something like that picture the undamaged pilot, front railings, kick plate and nose would still be visible.

If I remember correctly, the engine borrowed for the shooting was not damaged, the wreckage was just added to it .

Indeed, that was the case Chacal. And the inside wreckage was added as well.

For a good example of scripted child objects, try the free Britkit Russell snow plow. Look at the lua script and how it makes snow drifts appear and disappear according to the speed.
