Transferring Cab Models

Is there a method to replace a cabview on a locomotive with one from another locomotive? Some early loco releases had fairly primitive cabs when compared to others now available. I tried the obvious by copying the source cab folder into the destination locomotive folder and changing the name of the GEOPCDX file to that of the replaced file. All this did was kill the cabview altogether.
