Wierd shapes of wheel in game

Unread postby aksingha » Thu Apr 24, 2014 2:12 pm

Hi everyone, after following the dev docs of RW and some help from MRENNIE, i have put the simple engine model in TS2014 and been driving without any problems. But i noticed that the wheels are not looking as good as they were in 3Ds Max. Below are snapshots for comparison-

Is there something missing while the wheel was being modelled. I know 3Ds max quite well. although i am not an expert. I just can't figure it out. !*don-know!* !**conf**!

It looks as if you've applied smoothing to the entire wheel, making it look rounded, losing the sharp edges. Are you viewing it in 3DSMax as a smoothed object (looks like you aren't)?.

I have not applied any smooth modifier in any of the wheels. I have only kept 30 sides for the wheel.

Mike may be on the right track, even though you didn't apply smoothing.
I noticed the original 3D Crafter pic looks aliased, and the in game one doesn't. Could the Anti Aliasing smooth it that much?

The in game textures look a little blurred. Maybe in game settings aren't high enough?

AA only smooths jagged lines (steps) on the screen, by sampling adjacent pixels and averaging them, but what you see in those pictures is surface normal bending - it's information in the model itself to tell the in-game rendering engine how to reflect the light. I've never used 3DSMax but maybe there's something that automatically smooths everything even if you don't deliberately do it yourself, or perhaps it does it when exporting - just guessing.

Looking at your picture more closely, I can see that it's not a problem of smoothing. I think it might be the way you've mapped the textures. Did you use the "paint pot" technique of just "pouring" a single, uniform texture over everything? If so, try applying the texture individually to the different areas, e.g. selecting the end of the axles and mapping it separately from the rest of the wheel.

Thanks mrennie, just for testing, i took a texture of a loco in msts and converted it to RW ace and after applying the texture to engine body, the weird effect is not present anymore. Will try to see if it works for the wheels or not. I Guess, it should work.
