those are all good points and i think its not worth it, i have over 1tb of things so i dont feel like running into problems later, think ill just breat down and buy a 2tb ssd lol

TS Tools allows you to open AP files from the left-hand menu.

I tried zipping up some routes and turning them into .ap files a while ago.

It may have saved a little disk space, but it didn't seem to make a measurable difference to loading times or tile stuttering. I wouldn't bother.
