Swap all of Great Northern F7 rolling stock (Empire Builder)

Unread postby cnbalasub » Sat Feb 08, 2020 12:41 pm

I do have a question for anyone who can give me the answer. And it's about Workshop scenario with Empire Builder ( Great Northern F7 rolling stock including freight too). I found one workshop scenario and have not started to swap them in RW_Tools. For me I can't get Great Northern F7 in my program of Train Simulator 2020 as I live outside U.S., north of the border, Canada. I am not sure if we ever will see Burlington Northern company reinstated all of their stuff (Burlington Northern) for train simmers outside U.S. I doubt that we will get them from DoveTail Games and it's been a long time that we are not allowed to run Burlington Northern outside U.S. I think that it's been more than 5 years now and so far nothing yet with agreement between two companies, Burlington Northern and DoveTail Games. OK now what I want to say about swap the rolling stock in RW_Tools to take all payware rolling stock of EmpireBuilder01 in RSC folder and use others similar to them in freeware. Will that work and I know it takes time to change one after another consist to replace the payware rolling stock with freeware rolling stock.

Let me know about this.

Thank you,

John

Hi John,

Generally speaking, that should work. Swapping equipment in scenarios can be a bit tedious if many vehicles have to be changed, but the end result is usually a fully functional scenario with whatever rolling stock you want to use.

There are a few caveats and potential pitfalls to keep in mind:

1) I'd recommend to first create a clone of the scenario in question and do all your changes in that clone. Especially if the scenario is from the Workshop (and consequently Steam's "verify integrity" command would undo all your changes).

2) It's advisable to swap cars only for cars of similar length. Swapping (for example) 40 ft boxcars for 86 ft autoparts cars could cause issues like the revised consist spilling over the end of track, or AI consists being stretched across signals and causing AI traffic issues

3) When any cars are involved in consist operations like "drop off", "pick up" or similar, make sure the little check box in RW_Tools is set to *not* change the car numbers. Otherwise you'll get broken instructions in your scenario.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Michael,

Want to say thank you for your quick reply. And I plan to clone the scenario and swap all the consists the same as payware and freeware rolling stock. Like with GN 40ft Boxcars from payware rolling stock and I will change to Britkits or yours with GN 40" Boxcars. Will do this evening when I am bored on my computer.

Thank you again,

John

Hi John,
You can clone the scenario from within the game or from RW-Tools.

In RW-Tools, open the scenario as usual (Scenarios / Edit Scenarios / Choose route and scenario / Edit scenario).
Then change the "Display name" at top left. Change nothing else.
Then click on "Clone scenario with new name". This will create the clone.

When swapping cars or engines, you can speed up the process by using the "Swap in EVERY consist" button.

I find swapping engines is usually easy, but swapping rolling stock is a long, boring process.
It helps if you make yourself a table with "Cars to swap out" and "Cars to swap in", deciding in advance what to swap. Then you can use the "Swap in EVERY consist" button.

Note that I have placed a beta 'RW_Tools_Lite" on my site in which the options to swap items are improved. But please read the .pdf file before using it.

Well first of all want to say thank you for your reply. Unfortunately it doesn't work when I launch the program of TS 2020 and selected 64-bit version to startup then selected the route, Marias Pass and selected one of the payware rolling stock, Great Northern F7 and swap every one single rolling stock like diesel, passenger cars and freight cars. Guess what happen next with this and got the message " Out of Memory " Wow so I decided to delete the scenarios for Great Northern F7. It's gone for good. So I decided to launch the program of TS 2020 and go on but picked different route and different scenario. No problem. I don't know if TS 2020 like to see all rolling stock swap for freeware from payware. There's no point for me to send a ticket to them because they have not solved the problem with Out of Memory as I understand but I could be wrong.

Thank you,

John

John,
I think you may be trying to do too much at one time. Have you tried just swapping out one or two items saving and starting the scenario and see if it's working? If it does work then go back and swap out a couple of more things? Huge mass swaps rarely work for me. A little at a time usually works.

Buzz -- You're probably right because I changed all at once and that happened at Train Simulator 2020 with the message " Out of Memory " I will follow your suggestion to see if that will work. Thank you for the tip.
