Is It Worth Returning?

Unread postby ForceGhost » Mon Jul 06, 2020 6:02 pm

I would like some objective input. Although opinions on this can be strong on a personal level, please avoid the urge to turn this into a d**k comparing contest.

Life has taken me away from my train hobby, but now things have settled down and I find I have some time on my hands at the end of the day. Despite it's warts, when I left DTG's TS was the best for all-around content creation. Is there an ongoing interest in TS, or has it tailed off since the arrival of TSW. I want to take up a major project I have worked on in the past, but I don't want to waste my time if there are not enough people still interested in the sim.

Most (but not all) of the members of this forum have written off TSW completely. TSW2 is on the fast track to the landfill as far as I can see. TS20xx is still (warts and all) the gold standard for train simulators. There is still plenty of interest and plenty of development going on. I suspect it will be continued and improved by the community even if DTG abandons it, much like MSTS/Open Rails has flourished as a community effort over at that other place.

Strong as ever. More serious players here than on steam. Starting to see more old time players gravitate to this site. Good complete routes as well as WIP are always appreciated. Some new issues to work around since the last big update but not insurmountable. Welcome back. *&!welcome!&*

There is a lot of creative content being made here as we speak. TSXXXX isn't going away anytime soon as there are way too many still very dedicated to it. TSW is a dead man walking as far as any of the creative people are concerned. Go for it whatever you are planning. !!*ok*!!

Excellent! Encouraging news. Now, i've got to start completely from scratch. I dont even have a Steam Account anymoree. But fortunately I did back up all of the content I had and I still have Blender and Photoshop.

Welcome back! There is still a lot of life left in this sim. And we have a pretty darn good community here.

YES it's worth returning. TSW does not have the same look and feel, and there's little that an end user can do to develop content for it. Ostensibly TSW2 next month will have some of those capabilities, but TS20xx is very popular and there are a lot of people still developing content for it, from routes to scenarios and rolling stock, there's plenty out there and more all the time. Even DTG is still releasing new content.

The important thing is that you enjoy yourself. As with any hobby there are ups and downs. Fortunately, our ups are magnificent hills and mountains, and our downs are views from a trestle bridge looking at a beautiful flowing river below. TS20xx is still an amazing and wonderfully creative hobby for enthusiasts like you. Now get to work dammit! !!*ok*!!

I suspect that TS will remain as a widely used train sim into at least 2023 or later. MSTS has been in demise since about 2013, but there are still many using it.

At the moment, TS is like an 17 year old bus with a 25 year age limit. Do the maths and decide for yourself as to whether you personally like it or not.

Nobody's opinion outweigh's yours from your own perspective.

Edit: Didn't realise this post was over a month old. I only scrolled halfway down the page to find it.

Well, plans get made, but things don't always work out. I was all ready to get back in the game again, had even started uodating a route. Then, I discovered that the floor in two bathrooms, part of the kitchen, and a utility room in my house would have to be torn out due to a water leak. Since I am the "contractor" that will be performing the work, all other considerations are secondary until this is fixed. It won't do to have the Mrs. catch me playing trains while she has no shower! *!embar*!

The oxen move slowly but the Earth is patient. We will be here when the construction is complete. !!*ok*!!
