Trigger Wheelslip?

Unread postby imphantum » Tue Aug 27, 2013 12:00 am

In the scenario editor, if you apply the "trigger instruction" there's an option where you can intentionally make the player train have wheelslip. Now when you get the wheelslip when playing the scenario it seems as if it is impossible for the wheelslip to go away? I used the sander, nothing. I slowed down, nothing. I stopped the train and it was still giving me wheelslip somehow? This went on for a few minutes before I called it quits. Am I using the wheelslip option wrong? is it a bug? **!!bang!!**

Did you ever find out how to get over this problem? I want to use it for periods of between 30secs and a minute, but I'm having the same problem as you.

Unfortunately no I didn't, so I just took the wheel slip trigger out of the scenario !*don-know!* sorry!

Right - I think I've worked it out.

Open the scenario folder. Convert Scenario.bin using serz.exe to an .xml file.

In the scenario.xml file find:
<WheelSlipDuration d:type="sInt16">

if the line before is <TriggerWheelSlip d:type="bool">0</TriggerWheelSlip>
then ignore, and find next.

If line before is:
<TriggerWheelSlip d:type="bool">1</TriggerWheelSlip>
Then edit
<WheelSlipDuration d:type="sInt16">make this number the number of seconds that you want the wheel-slip for</WheelSlipDuration>
for example:
<WheelSlipDuration d:type="sInt16">30</WheelSlipDuration>
That will give you 30 seconds of wheelslip, before going back to normal.

Save your changes and convert the .xml file back to scenario.bin

It has worked for me! !!*ok*!!

But will it work for someone else who plays the scenario that doesn't mod the file?

Yes - Scenario.bin is one of the files that are in the scenario package, so it is already modded.

Curiosity has gotten the better of me: why do you want to artificially create wheel-slip anyway?

I can't go into the full details yet because it is for an unreleased scenario and I don't want to give too much away, but it works in the same way as a temporary loss of engine power, which if it happens before a hill, can make that climb a lot more difficult.

It adds just a little more to the scenario, and can come in handy with certain locomotives in certain areas. I'd rather not elaborate yet because I have I few ideas that I could use in a scenario too.

If you have Sherman Hill, take a run at Scenario #5, "Midnight Magnet". Wheel slip takes a part in the narrative of the scenario. It's pretty fun.
Best, !*cheers*!
