Saving & resuming a scenario

Unread postby OldProf » Mon Jun 17, 2013 8:58 am

Here's an interesting comment from RSC's Matt regarding saving and resuming scenarios:

with regards to multiple saves and continues ... Saving a[nd] restarting is not generally recommended for scenarios and should be avoided completely with scenarios with a high density of AI Because AI paths are recalculated from the restart point and trains mid path can[']t always be resolved, it can cause off paths and collisions and even if it doesn't kill the scenario it can cause the scenario to behave differently to the way the author intended. (my underlining)

Although it certainly coincides with my experience, I can't recall ever having come across this information in any users' manual. The biggest problem in following this advice would occur with long-run scenarios such as those on Marias Pass and Donner Pass, but I've run into AI glitches after saving and reloading short scenarios as well. It's something to keep in mind when writing scenarios with lots of AI.

It also messes up the signal states. I have stated these facts a while ago as I found them out from experience. Testing and retesting and the scenario never works the same unless you start from the beginning and go thw whole way through. SInce then I keep all my scenarios under an hour.

I agree with Bob. I wrote a few for the Montour and I always started from the begining. Now if you have the start comand line set you can use the control 5 to speed things up a bit while testing.

Speeding it up does not work correctly either, the AI timing gets screwed up.

Curses! Tin-foiled again!

I took another look at Matt's message and realized that he was writing about scenarios that contain hundreds of AI trains. Encouraged by that, I tried resuming a scenario with very little AI, but got smacked with a game-over error involving something about expecting a cab view, etc. Didn't mean anything to me, except that save/resume is apparently not a good idea at all. So how come I've been doing it successfully for years?
