A fix for the DD40X scenario "Big Jack's Climb!!!!!THANKS Pam Brooker

Thanks to Pam Brooker I figured out a fix for the "Big Jack's Climb" scenario.
Using her idea and with the help of Don's video tutorial "Placing the Challenger", I added 2 DD40X's( 1 Type 01 and 1 Type 02) to the scenario. Because the DD40X 6936 had to be fueled they couldn't be added to the rear of it so I added them to track 4 just in front of the ES44 or whatever that engine is. It seemed to be useless anyway. Then after I fueled 6936, I backed it onto track 4 picking up the Type 01, the Type 02, the ES44 and the freight cars. Making it a 4 engine train. Leaving the yard I had to be very careful because all that weight was trying to make the train overspeed(the first time I derailed because it got away from me and was going to fast). Once I left the yard I got the train up to 30 to 35 MPH and it held that all the way to Cajon North. I even had to slow down at times, especially when changing tracks just to make sure I didn't derail. Even after slowing down I was able to get the speed back up to 30-35 MPH with no trouble. The train ran like a top and held it's speed all the way. I finished the scenario in 50 minutes.
I think that the designers may have meant to add 2 more DD40X's to the original scenario as they called for 55 minutes for the completion time and forgot to add them in the end.
I'm a HAPPY CAMPER now. !*YAAA*!
Thanks again Pam for the idea!!!!! *!!thnx!!*
Thanks to Don for his great tutorials!!!!! *!!thnx!!*

PS: I did clone it first. !!*ok*!!

Surprised you didn't break the sound barrier going up Cajon *!lol!* That\'s about 23,000HP for 47 cars.

I haven't got around to trying it... I have modified the type 1 DD40 AX with Krellnut's Simulation File Mods. I will replace 6936 with the modified Type 1, and I bet it will do the trick.

We all had tried that and it didn't help with this scenario. That's why everyone is still talking about it. The DD40X works great with the other scenarios that came with it so to me it had to be in the scenario.
Give my fix a try. I think you will be very happy with it.

It worked for me, but it wasn't pretty. 2:05 for 26 miles with my slowest speed 12.6mph. It was a real grind

Using the scenario as it came from RSC or whoever The train would have wheel slip (yes, I was sanding) and come to a halt about 10.2 miles from the Cajon North Track Marker.

I have completed the scenario long ago by Tacking 2 ES44s to the rear of the consist as DPUs/helpers and was able to do the entire scenario at the speed limit.

I just wanted to see if it was possible to complete the scenario with just the power that came with it. It looks like Simulation File mods by Krellnut made the difference between not completing or completing the scenario.

QED

Thank you Krellnut!

I too was able to complete it before but it took almost 3 hours at an average speed of about 8 MPH. It never stalled on me but it wasn't very enjoyable either. That's why I decided to make this change. Now I can enjoy the scenario at a reasonable speed and time. I tried adding some engines that were laying around in the yard but I don't think they were powered because they didn't help at all. It was like I was just dragging them along. Now with my fix I know that the 2 added DD40X's are helping.
To each his own. I just know that I'm happy with it now. Others can make up their own minds about it.

yeahhhh, each d40x is comprised of two 3500 hp sd35s ( i'm pretty sure they were sd's ) giving it 7000 HP.. In real life, one of those is all youd need for cajon.. admittedly the speed isnt real good in real life either.. but its a whole lot better than 8 mph.. maybe 16 or 20 ;).. Its a real good climb to call the new guy to the front of the cab and have him push the dead mans button while you take a break ::LOL::

maxsdad, could you please upload your modified scenario so I can try it? I'm not smart enough to try to modify it. Thank you. :D

It has two 3300hp engines for 6600hp total... not 7000hp. EMD could have made the DDA40X an 8400hp locomotive if they had stretched the length and installed two of the 4200HP V20 engines used in the SD45X locos. The production dates of the DDA40X and SD45X overlap.... so they certainly had the engine technology available to do so had they chosen to. The SD45X is my favorite loco of all time. Mainly because they managed to get that much power out of a single diesel engine in 1970 long before anyone else was. It wouldn't be until the early 1990s before either GE or EMD would produce a single engined locomotive that would surpass the SD45x's 4200HP. It was way ahead of it's time power wise for a single engine.

I would love to play with the DDA40X, but RSC took it off steam to upgrade it to TS2013 standards. I await it's return eagerly. *!greengrin!*

Alco/MLW broke the 5000 HP mark before EMD with the 18-251F. The engine is still offered by Fairbanks Morse

I would gladly give you my modification if I knew how to find and copy the correct file. I haven't got the slightest idea how to do it. If someone would tell me how to do it, I'll put an attachment on a post for you.

I went to the Fairbanks Morse website and they list 4500hp as the highest rating for that engine series. Here is their spec sheet brochure off their website...

I goggled that engine and 5000hp. YOUR post here ....

http://www.railroadforums.com/forum/sho ... p?p=210980

...Is the only reference I found on the net. And you were talking about the 251F-16 there and not the 18 cylinder version. Please provide some level of proof that a 5000hp version of this engine even exists AND that it existed before EMD's 5000hp engine.

The point of my post was that after EMD made that 4200hp engine back in 1970, it would be over 20 years before a single locomotive diesel engine would match or surpass it. 20+ years is a long time to hold a record.

As for the modern horsepower race like the SD90MAC vs. AC6000CW. We are in a time where engine builders are more or less even in terms of technical know-how and achieving horsepower parity is much easier now if they want to do it. Does anybody really think EMD couldn't get another 100hp out of the SD70ACe to match GE's 4400hp locos? The SD45X proved that by getting another 600hp out of it's V20 engine that was in the regular SD45. It was considerably more horsepower then it's competition.

I don't know how to either. I'm still trying to buy the DD40X, so maybe someone can help on getting it uploaded.Trying to get any mods and scenarios so when I finally get the DD40X I can have some fun :D

I don't have an account on Railroad forums though... The 18 cylinder 251 is capable of 5000 horsepower according to an older Fairbanks Morse catalog I have here. Also, MLW/ALCO was the first to not only hit 4000 horsepower, but to have AC traction.
