New scenario for Settle to Carlisle sent to RWA

Unread postby OldProf » Thu May 03, 2012 4:05 pm

I just sent Hawk my newest scenario. It's called "Hopscotch, anyone?" and runs on the RW3 Settle to Carlisle route.

This one has been a real bear to write, primarily because the rules of the road for the route kept changing from session to session. Not to give too much away, the scenario involves shunting exercises at several small areas, beginning in the Carlisle Freight Yard (how many of you knew that such a place existed?). There, I ran into points and signals that would not change in the ordinary course of running, requiring instead a "save-quit-resume" sequence, which I now think of as the RW version of "Ctrl-Alt-Delete". Farther up the line, maneuvers that worked perfectly with minimal instructions one day would fail the next, leaving the driver without a path forward or backward in some cases. What could be handled with Waypoint instructions on other routes required DriveTo instructions on this one, except that the Waypoints worked when I first put them in, then failed to do so in a later editing & driving session.

When I finally managed to complete the scenario myself, I decided that packaging time had come. I just hope that it runs for others!

Good to see you're putting your money where your mouth is. Or more accurately, putting your generosity where your money is. I hope this works out without any hassles.

My scenarios have always been and always will be freeware. The read-me file for this latest scenario as well as some of the instructions it contains point out several problem spots that the player will encounter and provide instructions for overcoming them. This is a complicated scenario and, contrary to what you think (as expressed in another thread), writing scenarios is not an easy matter. If you run the scenario and experience problems, I'll be happy to hear about them.

I've played a couple of Tom's scenarios. They are well thought out and fun to boot. I would recommend them without any qualms.

That's what we need: a scenario and scenario pack review page!
