Scenario Across America (Really?....idk)

Unread postby CSX2057 » Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:00 am

Hey guys now I'm thinking of doing this whole america route thing but I don't how it'll Start. !*don-know!*

The american routes we now have is Sanbernardino to barstow, castle rock railroad, SOO Line, CSX Mainline, Portland Terminal, Chicago Yard, and Norfolk Southern - Atlanta North District. Now don't get me wrong or try to !!bang!! me like you're trying to make me look bad *!embar*!

I don't know if you like this idea or not but it'll really help me out and I might try it out. I've been doing some AI trains for myself and it looks more fun with other trains running right by you.

Now get this idea for example, lets say you're pulling 40 containers car with 3 BNSF locomotives. You start from san bernardino picking up containers and head to barstow, switch crews there (AI will take over) then they will enter to portal heading to Castle Rock Railroad. Switch crews in Castle Rock, (you take over) head to monuement, switch crews again (AI will take over). To SOO Line, switch crews (you take over) I'm not sure what is the name of the city it starts from so you start from one track to head to the other end, switch crews (AI wil--ah you get what I mean), then last stop is to chicago yard, switch crews and head to the Container Unloading #1 or #3 unload the containers and thats it. I will be adding other trains in the scenario.

What do you think? !*don-know!*

Oh, good grief. The entire US? Coast to coast? That's gonna take a week in real time. I mean to drive in in RW, not to create it. Gonna take a lot of time to create this route. Which way you gonna go? There is the route in the southwest, the route up north thru Seattle then to Chicago.

OK, portals, that could work. But you are gonna have to jump half way across the country, and hope to find a RW scenario you can jump to.

I'm not saying this would not be cool, because I actually would love a cross country route. Just a big undertaking.

I think its a great idea. Kinda like a day (or week) in the life of a container on a double stack car. You could do it now with the routes available, without the need for portals (unless you want AI). Just have a scenario in each route like "Across America [Part n]" and so on. In fact once the P42's come out you can do it some Amtrak routes (be nice once Marias Pass and my route is done).

wait i am confused? did you mean you are going to create a route or just make a scenario that connects all the existing routes using portals?

I like the idea. I remember several multi-route scenarios hosted by the MSTS Virtual Railroading websites and they were fun. One I remember in particular was a tour of the American Freedom Train using different steam locomotives for each route. Go for it.

The title said scenario. !*don-know!*

I don't think it would be wise to join the routes themselves (the tools to do this exist). The loading time would probably be unbearable, and then you have the issue that you could not release the route because it contains payware. Using scenarios also that if you don't own a particular route then you can skip to the next 'part', and when a new route becomes available and you want to slip it in to the mix you can say something like "Across America [part 2.2]" (be careful because the number can get out of sync).

Thats what I do. I have two virtual railroads using MSTS that do those kind of work orders. You go from route to route across the US. I am now setting up another VR using Railworks and will be doing those kinds of scenarios for it. Wont be the whole US though, not enough routes yet. But the scenerios will span several routes.

I am going to make a scenario. Yes I might use the portals or make a final destination but I'm not sure how it will be done, the routes will be not be connected to load all at once. I wasn't going to go for that, all routes will be separated but I will add the title scenario like this "San Bernardino to Chicago Yard: Cross Country" each route so you won't get confused.

I'll keep that in mind Thanks.

Good idea! !*cheers*!

I don't have to use portals, I can make the final destination for you guys and move on to the next route. You can do all the routes in one day, week or a month if you like. I'll talk to some people about using their routes and I'm sure they won't mind *!lol!*

I think your challenge will be to make it a good mix of long haul and disassembling/reassembling trains. I can see actions getting repetitious, and that may bog down the whole experience.

Too bad we don't have AI helpers (yet). I was watching this YouTube and it would make for an interesting diversion in a scenario: http://www.youtube.com/user/1jackdk#p/u/37/Miwu8hWVOVs

Another idea came to mind for when RW3 is released. You can have a scenario where the train has a broken engine. So now you can running your SD40s out to lash up and pull it to the nearest yard where you can then push/pull the dead engine off to a siding.

COOL! Its a big step for me and did you say AI helpers? Don't have any? I think we will have AI Helpers in this scenario !*brav*!

I think you misunderstood me. AI helpers are on my wish list for RW3. *!greengrin!*

It doesn't mean that you can't add helpers between scenarios. Just like your idea for a crew change over.

It brings a question to mind. Can you (the player) be a helper for an AI? If this could happen then you can do something like this:

I think it can be done. I set the AI to a final destination. They call in you go and hook them up. I think I'll give it a try.give it a try.

UPDATE

Yup It worked! !*brav*! I just tested a AI train UP 316...it broke down and they stopped next to a signal. I was driving Santa Fe gp9 and brought next to up...I switch one of the UP engines to push the train back a little and I switch tracks to bring in the Santa Fe and hook up the UP.

2nd Update
Here is the Google Map link below:

I shorten the link to bit.ly because the Google Map link is really long and I didn't want to add it here.

Instead of Portals, you could use a "crew change" scenario to change between routes. Have the train stop at the end of the route and put in some instructions to make it look like a crew change. Then start the train up in the next scenario on the next route. Make it more realistic by making the crew wait for the train to be inspected and the brake pressure to come up after the "handover".

If i'm not mistaken, when a train from another railroad comes into a new division or or subdivision, the crew is changed to one that knows that routes. I do this on the AND at the point where the CNO&TP changes over to the Atlanta North District.

Containers aren't the only trains that are transcontinental. Produce trains travel from the west coast to New York; the Tropicana Juice train goes up the east coast, so on, so forth.
