locomotive state at scenerio start

Wasn't sure whether to post here or in the general 2015 forum...

Has anybody had success in creating a scenerio with the "new" feature of starting the scenerio with the loco moving? I am interested not so much in it moving, but being in a state ready to move. I had thoughts about a scenerio over Sherman Hill with the Overland consist with it starting with the player ready to back onto the train, so everything in the engine needs to be in a running state, not having to set generators and lights etc. Just not sure how to go about it - I read it is a crtl f2 but I am unsure how to set the loco state for that to work...

Create the scenario
Set the rolling start option in the scenario dialog (after clicking the scenario marker)
When finshed start playing it, applying all settings you want.
Press Ctrl+F2 and save it.

Done

BUT: if you change the scenario aferwards you MUST remove the rolling statr save info. It may corrupt the task list.

Just to echo this. The rolling start should be the absolute last thing you do. If you modify the task list after setting it, you will have to remove the rolling start information and re-do it, otherwise the new changes won't be evident in the scenario.

I've wondered about this, too, but had not figured out how to make it work. I remain confused about "applying all the settings you want": does this mean settings such as wipers, lights, and speed? I gather that when this option is applied, the scenario opens with the driver/player in the cab and the settings, whatever they may be, applied?

Yes I said that, but unfortunately there is no guarantee that those settings will actually work. Just have to try each one. The same holds for a save game. On some rolling stock engine state is not preserved well, e.g. the Class 395, the Just train class 20 or the HRQ BR189. This can be quite annoying.

Because this applies to one of my questions, I will ask here. How do I apply a rolling start to an AI train? When I first started creating my scenario, I just built an AI train just to see if it works correctly. It did, but now I'm thinking about making it reach the player a bit earlier. I did manage to set up the train right next to a portal. Should I just throw the train into the portal and release it at the beginning of the scenario?

In my experience (and I will brag that my experience with portals is considerable), an AI train emerges from a portal rolling at its startup speed, which depends on the relationship between power and load. It then gradually reaches line speed, which can be adjusted somewhat within the editor. The only way to actually gauge the relationship between an AI train and the player train is to run the scenario, but keep in mind that the player train's speed depends upon and varies with the player. As a scenario writer or editor, you have some control over the AI train's speed, but no control over the eventual player. This is one of the greatest frustrations of scenario creation!

Before I created an account here, I read about a problem someone had where the train would spawn, then get stuck in a loop of despawning/respawning. I can't remember if they fixed it, but when the AI train approached me, it despawned and respawned at the portal. It also took about an extra minute for the initial spawn. I had to remove it from the portal. If it worked correctly, it would have been a great effect.
