Quick Drive & AI

Unread postby Shortliner » Sat Jun 08, 2013 4:31 pm

Is Quick Drive supposed to have AI? Because if so, then I haven't seen it. I did 30 minutes on a Quick Drive session on Marais Pass today and have yet to come across another AI train.

I have also wondered this. I also would like to know how to make engines and routes work in quick drive. I.E; P42DC, C40-8, Ann Arbor, NERW... etc)

I don't always get AI trains operating in my quick drives-- I'm not sure what determines their presence. I just tried a QD on WCML (power choice was a Class 55 Deltic) and there was nada, then tried a QD on Sherman Hill (power choice was BNSF SD40-2) and there were several AI consists operating, including one arriving at Laramie while I was heading out. !*don-know!*

Hmmm, I wish we could see which part of the QD code controls AI, because I wouldn't mind playing my trains with AI that doesn't have a set script.

Here's my educated guess:

Each QD consist has an associated valid route and time period. When you choose a QD, maybe the sim sets up AI using the other QD consists that fit the route and year that you're running. So if there aren't any QD consists that fit the criteria (except your own), you don't see any other AI.

Good guess...why not submit the question to RSC?

Not quite, I took a F40PH on one of the UK routes and there were UK locos running around...I think I made them feel a little small lol

But that's just my point ... those UK locos running around a UK route are probably there precisely because they fit the criteria (they go with the route and time period). What would have been very strange would have been to see US consists running as AI around the UK route.

A route will not have AI in Quick Drive unless the person who created the quick drive scenario put them there.

There is a link to Paul Godber's YouTube tutorial for creating QD scenarios with static and AI, including how to make them semi-random so you do not always meet the same train every time. http://mainescenery.proboards.com/threa ... o-building

If you use RW_Tools to create QD Consists, it is very easy to specify the routes where your consist will appear as AI. And also easy to create a class of consist which can then be spawned on your favorite route.

If you want to find out more, check out the tutorials on my website: http://mainescenery.proboards.com/board/33/tutorials

You can contact me here or there if you have questions or want clarification.

I actually want my train to stop at a red signal or randomly somewhere.

Also I want foreign stock to come like a mixed cn and bnsf train not just local stock from that route but like a a canadian national sd70m-2 and a bnsf es44dc with stacks or I want my custom made consists as ai.

Also in his tutorial does he say that those ai trains will stop at signals?

What? No I didn't say if AI trains would stop at signals. That is not the point of any of the tutorials. HOWEVER, an AI train does wait at the signal for me to clear the station in one scenario so I suppose if you read the tutorials and actually make an effort, you might have the same results.

Also, the most important tutorial is not mine, it was done by Paul Godbur, one of the most talented developers in Railworks. Without his video you won't get much accomplished. And as clear and easy as it is, I watched it a dozen times trying bits and pieces and deleted a lot of dreck before I got working scenarios. There is a learning curve, but if you really want custom quick drives, get started.
