New here, need some help please

Unread postby hawkeye53 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 12:05 am

Sorry if I may sound long winded here, but I just started playing around with the scenario editor not too long ago, and have run into a problem.

First let me say that I designed many activities with MSTS, so I'm familiar with working with editors. But this problem it puzzling me.

I amworkin on an activity on the Cajon Pass route starting in East Victorville and ending in Barstow. I have set up some pickups at East Victorville and want to do another pickup at Oro Grande on my way to Barstow. I defined a waypoint to get my train to leave the mainline and enter Oro Grande Siding 4, make a pickup in Oro Grande, then enter the mainline again. I'm attaching a picture to show that the red line on the path does indeed enter the mainline again. The only problem is, my train does not cross over again to the mainline, but continues straight to a dead end at Oro Grande Siding 1.

When I leave the yard at East Victorville, I have a yellow signal before proceeding on to the mainline. The next signal after that is red, which alerted me that there is a problem down the line somewhere. If anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it. Defining a path was much easier in MSTS !**conf**!

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Patrick

Put a destination marker where you want it to crossover to and then assign a go via command to make it follow that path or you could use a waypoint flag to do the same thing.

OK, I added a destination marker and defined it as a waypoint. Here is what I get:

BTW, how do I add a "go via" instruction?

That error message comes up now after the upgrade to 2013. I have found that if you save the scenario and reload it, everything will be ok. If the path you made is correct in your mind but the AI dispather gives you that crazy error, chances are the save and exit from the sim, then restart the sim and reload the scenario it will be ok. It is one of the newest quirks we have.

The "go via" is actually the STOp AT function that little pointing finger I believe. If you look at it's properties after placing one, there is a speed limit section. 0 is a stop at and any other speed like 1mph makes it a "go via". You could also put text in the bigger box below to have a pop up message.

I'm not trying to be a "smart alec" but it really would help if you would read the RW Timetable View Manual_Web.pdf. It's an excellent tutorial on creating scenarios and it's located here: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Manuals\EN.

There are also several good scenario creation tutorials here on the RWA Forum. Try this link: viewforum.php?f=8.

RW scenarios require a different mindset from MSTS, but I like the RW Scenario Creator much better. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing some of your work published here.

Thanks for the suggestions, and no offense taken. I've read the creator manual, which is very vague if you ask me. What really helped me in getting started was following some tutorials I found, especially Marleyman's. I'm not one who gives up easily, so I'll keep trying until I get it right.

The Timetable pdf manual is the best thing we have. And the newest from RSC.

Thanks to everyone's help, I finally was able to define my path correctly. I'm still having the problem of a red signal outside of East Victorville which will not let me pass. There's no reason I can see why it should be red. I want to try placing my player train on the mainline and backing into the sidings from there to see if that corrects the problem. Is there a way to create a reverse point in the scenario editor like there was in MSTS? I've tried to find the answer to this, but can't find one. Thanks again.

Have you tried pressing TAB or CONTORL TAB to pass the red light? TAB for red in front of you and CONTROL TAB for red behind you .

Possible causes for this red signal:
- next junction is manual and not correctly aligned;
- junction is locked by the dispatcher for an AI consist with higher priority than your train.
- error in the track network.

Yes it is possible to create a reverse point in the scenario editor. You just have to put a "destination marker" on the track. It is one of the objects in the list that you get when you select the semaphore icon (sorry can't remember the actual name of that icon).
First you select the destination marker in the list, then you click on the track to place it. Then you can move one or both ends of it by selecting its 3D end arrows and sliding them along the track. Double-clicking on the center post lets you open the properties dialog at right, if needed.

This will be a scenario-level marker, it does not change any other scenario or the route itself. You can also add all kinds of things at this level, including people, vehicle, lights, etc. Cows even, if you are so inclined.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I did try pressing the TAB key but was denied going through the red signal. And I had no AI trains set up yet. The track ahead was totally clear. I'll keep playing around with it until I get it right. I'll try setting up a reverse point first. Thanks again.
