New API system from Google?

Unread postby 5292nate » Mon Jan 14, 2019 2:03 am

Has anyone dealt with the new API system for google maps? Seems you have to pay now but the way I'm reading it, it looks like you have to load the map a few hundred thousand times a month before you get charged. Anyone have the rundown on it?

I have one old API key which has never gotten any billing information and it still works without a problem.

But a second key I created after the introduction of their payment system on another account doesn't work without billing information.

There was (or still is?) the option to run TS without an API key but the last time I tried this, some tiles load and others remained as blue circles.

I've been using it every day since the summer, while working on the Promontory route, and I've never been billed. I don't think our kind of usage would ever get anywhere near the threshold where you have to pay.

The new system finally caught up with me a few weeks ago. When I returned to route building all I got were the spinning blue circles. Tried with and without my old api key; but I'm not going to give Google my credit card info just to establish an account under their new system. Fortunately, I was able to lay the majority of track on my route while the old api was working, so I'm still able to slowly build things using direction and distance from known-points along the trackage, plus eye-balling features from maps. I never thought shooting mortars in the Army would be useful in this capacity *!lol!*

Edit: I forgot to mention that importing markers into my route has been a bust, despite following every video and tutorial on the internet; that's why I've resorted to using "direction and distance from existing features" for route building. So for all I know, there may be something amiss with importing markers as well; but that's another topic (and I've not posted about it yet).

I don't understand it. Does this refer to the reduction in the amount of free data that commenced on June 11 last year, or something more recent?
