Good morning/afternoon/evening/night to my Train Sim family! I just recently had a look at MRennie's advice on how to make a quillable horn, but sadly was not able to get anything working. Making quillable horns is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time and have NEVER been able to make it work.

So, my question is this: Is there anyone out there who can teach me how? I'd like to do the type of quill from like the Pacific Surfliner, where you push the N key or whatever.

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated!

Hi mate...

Not that I can specifically help you with this, but I would first have a look at the audio bin files etc of a locomotive that has a quill-able whistle / horn. Any of Mike's and the new B&LE Sante Fe's from GTrax also has one. From my recollection, it is not the sound file, but instructions within the sound handling bin that instructs the sim to play simultaneously the whistle but at a lower pitch, to simulate a lower passage of steam through the whistle. Dismal horns should be a similar process.

Aren´t Mike´s quillable whistles scripted?

Aren't quillable horns and whistles a feature of older locomotives with hand operated direct pneumatic/steam valves to the horns and whistles?

Modern locomotives with a control desk and 'pushbutton' horn and electric valve aren't quillable?

You are correct sir.

After the 90s most couldn’t be quilled anymore . RSC had them on the f59phis And coaster equipment, and possibly more.

The scripting is for other features such as Jupiter's signals to the brakemen or the FEF-3's whistle cord that swings from side to side when the locomotive is moving.

The quilling is done through an additional "Quill" control value defined in the engine blueprint, which is associated with the Enter key through the loco's inputmapper, and used via a modifier curve in the sound blueprints to alter the pitch of the whistle sound (the one usually associated with the "Horn" controller) while it's playing.

Some Amtrak locomotives such as the P42DC, F59PHI, and ACS-64 have electric valves but are quillable because they have valves that can open at 50% allowing the quill.
