I’d like to several good freight routes with good operating potential. There are a number in TS201X. But many more famous sections of well-known routes have been done already and don’t have great operating potential either. Most of the routes we have from DTG are long stretches between two yards.
The best routes for operation have been the fictional short lines from the Workshop, like Adriana County, or third party routes, like Stevens Pass, or Keith's routes for Scotland, or Allaboard's old routes. China Clay for Export shows just how fun a freight oriented shortline in beautiful scenery can be, but I don’t know how popular it was.
I like the idea of a historical route, not only for the historical and scenic interest, but because of the increased operating potential of '50's RRs and earlier. The Horseshoe is still one of my favorite DTG routes (although it’s operations are largely limited to yard work at either end). The Western Lines of Scotland has superb operations (love all the dock switching). These could serve as models. Even a pre-war version of the NY&NH would offer both recognizable RRing with excellent operating potential. I’d love to see something like that and would buy it in a heartbeat.
But, doing something like this would mean making a whole new set of assets. I hope they do so, but at least part of the reason they focus so much on modern passenger lines has to be the number of assets they’ve built for those already.
