DSR Factors and Smoothness for nVidia

Unread postby artimrj » Tue Mar 21, 2017 9:56 pm

I ran across a tip tonight. In your NVidia Control Panel set DSR - Factors at 4.0 (the highest setting I have) and set DSR - Smoothness to 12%. I am getting 10 to 15 more FPS. I am also using Marley Man's set up and have phys-x to gpu.

Oh and the ms value under the FPS value is milliseconds and I believe that is how fast the screen is refreshing. Higher the FPS the lower the ms is; ie the faster it is.

Setting the DSR factor alone does nothing. It only unlocks a new resolution for you to select in the game (any game, or even your desktop resolution.) If anything happened at all, most likely the sim re-enumerated your available resolutions and picked a default that was lower than what you had set previously without you realizing. That or placebo. ;) DSR scaling at 4.0 means a 4x (!!!) size resolution. Your sim would slow to literally single digit FPS or even less if you actually selected that resolution.

Well I actually did set it up a 4.0 (at native resolution) and I actually do get more FPS. It even makes Trainz run better. I ran TSW for 2 hours last night in amazement. So now what?

I may be an idiot as a newby to nVidea, but I can't find what you are referring to in my NVIDEA control panel. I have 1070 gpu.

It is a few lines down in your Manage 3D Settings. I am running 378.78.

I'm just telling you DSR doesn't actual do anything unless you actually select the new higher resolution from the game in question. "DSR factor" means dynamic super resolution. Placing a check box in any of the scaling factors simply adds a new resolution into the list of available resolutions on your PC. Let's say your display's native resolution was 2560x1440. Your monitor cannot display any more pixels than that, but if you placed a check box in DSR factor 1.50x, you will now be able to choose 3840x2160 as a resolution in your games/desktop. What this does is make the video card render everything at 3840x2160 and then "down sample" it to 2560x1440. It's sort of like a really aggressive (and power hungry) form of anti aliasing.

However if you don't actually choose the new resolution in your game(s), then everything will be exactly the same as before.

You're right about this plethaus.

And how do you do this in the game?

Hi Buzz,

If You have enabled DSR in the global settings, the different new resolutions will be available in-game under the screen setting/resolutions, but be aware, it will lower your FPS.
I used it in Railworks, but in TSW theres little improvement, IMHO.

Thanks lowering my FPS will turn the game into a slide show but then I am only running a lowly commercial grade GTX1060. Of course this rig runs the MRL at over a hundred out in the country and 50-60 in towns on TS2017.

I have just updated the Nvidia driver to the latest 378.92 whql, and it makes a noticeable difference on my system. Nothing huge, but even a little enhancement is welcome.

NVidia's DSR (and the generic Downsampling) are just methods of applying Anti-Aliasing.
DSR may NOT work in higher resolution monitors anyway, plus TSAA in TSW may be superior.
I do not see any improvement (some worsening) of performance and visuals in TSW using ANY of the DSR settings from 1.25 to 4.0 at smoothing set at 0, 15, 85 and 100%),

As said above DSR does NOT work in TSW UNTIL you set the DSR resolution!
DSR in the NVCP is set under General/Global settings and not for TSW settings.

Maarleymans' settings are using OVERRIDE TSW AA settings I find application controlled or enhanced much better ones. LOD bias has to be set to ALLOW as clamp no longer works!
