This is an awesome project that would prove useful if I ever want to create a route.

This is an ongoing project to plot both existing and former railways of Quebec using Google Earth. We have uploaded the map as a KMZ file which may be accessed in Google Earth or ArcGIS Explorer.

The map layers are organized into current (existing) trackage and abandoned trackage. These sections are subdivided by railway in a directory tree and essential details including when a particular railway was constructed, changed hands and if applicable, abandoned are also included where possible.

I don't know if projects like this exist for other places than province of Quebec.
It is quite interesting to navigate and see all railways that used to be. In the case of my hometown Quebec City, more track has been ripped out than what remains. The map even shows defunct roundhouses, and made me discover the huge one still existing.
