The USGS is now providing GeoTIFF files,
https://apps.nationalmap.gov/downloader/#/How can these be converted to HGT for using with Train Simulator?

They cannot be converted as they are too big of files for converting to hgt. The only way would be to write a program like ReDEM that can convert to directly to a route.

I now have a key for ReDem. Is this still the best method?

One of the users like BoostedFridge that is an expert at that would have to answer. How did you get a key for ReDEM since they are no longer selling them?
