DEM Terrain data not seeming to work

Unread postby CSXK921 » Mon Nov 09, 2020 4:18 pm

(I'm creating this thread due to the help thread for the tutorial I am following is years old)

I've recently decided to get back into recreating my hometown and have been trying to import terrain data. My issue is right at the end where I've had to create the "DEM" folder and the subfolder "SRTM" to put all the .hgt files into. I'm pretty sure I have everything correct but when in game (yes I am at the correct coordinates) and I try to load the DEM data nothing changes. I have followed the searchlight simulations tutorial to a "T" and im at a loss on what could be happening.

well, it sounds like you have the correct folders and in it you should have height maps (.hgt) in the folder STRM that come from a similar source. Usually, and this is from past experience, if you have no terrain change when using the tool, then you have no tiles that relate to that area. I suggest you get your height files from a different source as I have found several that have been corrupt and by changing the files from a different source usually solves the problem. I also had files from the same source that were corrupt, and would leave the terrain at its present state which creates a straight line when crossing from good files to corrupt ones. I get my height files from https://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1 ... Region_06/ now, if you aren't too concerned about a small arc second. Not all the small arc second height maps will show railroad track bed elevations, in fact I have seen few that do, only in special terrain situations.

Please post a screenshot of the contents of your SRTM folder. I'm 99% sure I know what you're doing wrong.

I don't see anything wrong here. My only thought is the wrong coordinates, but as you said, you typed in the right ones.

-edit: I might be that you didn't download the right ones or enough files. I usually download more than I need.

I tried downloading the data from this site and it worked! *!!thnx!!* *!!thnx!!* *!!thnx!!* wonder if I can get a higher resolution with redem and another source. I did not get nearly anything to help me really out of this source. though I am glad it worked for once! does anybody know how to get redem anymore? It seems like it has gone into vaporware status.

Glad it worked. Boosted had a site that handles 1/3 arc second data here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17791 not sure how accurate and how the files are now, just sayin.

I'm glad it was just bad files. Your installation looked good.

The files from the link that Railwanderer posted are 1 arc second, which is as good as you can import directly into the game without ReDem. They are 3x more detailed than the 3 arc second files you had started with, so you're moving in the right direction.

The team at Zugware removed ReDem from the market several years ago. I have emailed them in the past about re-releasing it, but haven't gotten a response.

Yah I hope they decide to re-release it as it seems their plans from back then seem to have fallen by the wayside sadly. I'll just put the route aside until I can get the high resolution data. Thanks for all the help guys! !*hp*!
