Bing Elevation Maps for TS2020 (or TSW)?

Unread postby xxuntitledxx » Sat Jan 25, 2020 12:07 pm

Hey all,

So I've been following the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 development. For that sim they are using Bing Maps for elevation. I heard that the accuracy of the elevation is down to CM in height. So that got me wondering... Is there anything that accurate for us to use for elevation, or...is it even possible to pull elevation from Bing and then translate it to where it's useful in TS2020 (or TSW for those daring in the future?) In theory if it's as accurate as it is... all we would need to do is just lay the assets on top of the land form given to us since it's basically what is in the real world plus or minus a few centimeters. Right?

The main limiter here is the tile size in TS20xx. Even at 1/9 arc second resolution, the tiles in the game are too big to accurately follow any extreme elevation changes. Bing, Google, and many mapping agencies and services use one meter resolution in many areas, which again is far beyond what this 11 year old game engine can use.

That may be for TS2020, but what about TSW? and yes the article about elevation using bing that was referenced was why i asked.

No one but DTG know anything about what TSW can or can't do.

i know Unreal can do some pretty amazing stuff. i’ve been messing around with the editor from time to time and i know you can import height map files into it, just haven’t seen anything super accurate used. hopefully once they unlock an editor (whenever that may be) we can play around...i’ve been debating on doing my route in that too. hopefully in a lot less time
