Google Maps API

Unread postby wlenz781 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 4:44 pm

I have a Google Maps Static API that I have been using since 2017 with no problems. I have built a new PC and am wanting to get back to route building for my KCS mainline projects. When I open the Google Satellite feed all I get are the blue circles and my Google Maps API records errors requesting data. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you manually add your API key to your new Train Simulator installation on the new PC, or did you copy/paste it in?

I copy and pasted like I always have as it is a long HEXcode. I have already completed the billing information, but I may need to make sure that it isn't expired.

I found the original key on the account page not long after enabling the overlay on the PC with a new key that for some reason didn't bring up any imagery. I have never set up a billing account, but I still try to keep the loads to an absolute bare minimum!

I finally got it to work. Apparently I needed to resolve a trial of Google Cloud Platform and enable the free account. I have no idea what this is, but as soon as I did it everything started working again.

Google sure goes out of their way to makes things difficult for us route builders. My API went bye bye for 7 months. Then this past May, it suddenly started working again. My account was valid that whole 7 months, darn thing just wouldn't work. Go figure.....

I attached my payment info to my Google account when they first made that change. I haven't had a single overlay related issue since then. So my own experience with it has been overwhelmingly positive. Compared to using RWdecal like in the early days of Railworks, the Google Earth overlay is a breeze.

Were you receiving the "Google Cloud Platform & APIs" invoices each month for that whole time?

Yep. Got the invoices that whole time. Everything looked OK and the API was enabled. Whatever it was, it's been working now since May.
