What are some good route building/track layings tips I should know?

Beginning work on CSX's Homestead Sub, was wondering if there are any good pieces of advice I should know.

A friend showed me this once and it can prove pretty helpful to get various heights exact especially if the SRTM data import is being a little weird in some places like along river banks or hills. You can click on any point and it will give you the topographic elevation. It will be in meters though so make sure your units match...

The best way is to go via Matt Peddlesden official channel on Youtube.
You filter out which video you want to watch say laying tracks or platforms etc.
