hotkey to flush the 'undo' buffer OR turn it off completely

I think the solution to the constant CTDs while editing/painting, is to find a better way to flush the 'undo' buffer rather than having to constantly save, get out of the editor, and get back in.

On my system with my route, when I start editing, approx 2.6 gig memory is used by TS. As I click the paint button, for instance painting ground textures, memory usage goes up x number of meg with each click, accumulating quickly. By the time it reaches close to 3.5 gig usage, I have to click the exit arrow for editing, in order to save what I've done and let TS flush the undo buffer. Memory usage goes back to around 2.6 gig, and I keep going like that.

Anyone know of a hotkey, while editing, that will flush the undo buffer? Or one that disables 'undo?' Or perhaps a command line option to disable 'undo?'

Doesn't an F2 save allow you to save without exiting the editor?

eta~ I suppose that doesn't clear the memory though in any event.

WHen I had that problem, when memory was short, go and place some other objects and you ill see the memory coming back. Then you can paint some more.

On my system, running RW in windowed mode also seems to help prolong the time I can edit the terrain paint without crashing. I can also confirm Bob's workaround, just go back to world edit mode after painting a small area and place a few trees on a couple of tiles, press F2, then go back to painting. Also, it doesn't really depend on the area you paint, but more on how many mouse clicks of the paint tool you do it with. So you can paint huge areas with a 500-size brush in one go, but applying many small patches of paint might lead to the lock-up much quicker.

Cheers
Michael

Thanks for the replies. I tried that technique, putting some trees in the quicklist, and varying the paint with placing trees. Release memory over time. I still wish there were a hotkey for flush, to release a large amount of memory immediately.

I tend to do a lot of clicks in painting, trying to blend textures, so run into quick trouble.

surely this memory problem has been reported many times to DTG over the years. Guess it's way down on their list of priorities.
