Niles Canyon Railway

Unread postby dleeboy » Fri May 13, 2016 1:38 am

Niles Canyon Railway is my next project. I made this route several years ago. The problem is that I used all kinds of assets payware and freeware assets. Another thing is I have learned a lot on route making since then.

So this new route will be made so I can put it in the Workshop. And to do that Train simulator 2016 will not allow third party assets.
I will use four payware routes to make this.

Pacific Surfliner
Sherman Hill
Soldiers Summit
Stevens Pass

The Niles Canyon section will be made as close to the way it is today as I can with the assets I will be using.
That part starts in Niles and goes to Pleasanton California. I am doing both the Niles Canyon Scenic Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad Track.

I am using Google Earth to make the grades as accurate as I can.

I am also making parts of Fremont so everyone can use the Niles Junction. Parts of this section will be using Union Pacific Track for Freight and Amtrak trains. Parts will be real and fictional. I made a yard for everyone's Trains and freight cars. It is located at the existing Bart yard in Fremont.
I made a loop at that area so the route will be connected to the other parts of the route.

In Pleasanton for the Niles railway and Union pacific. I will put in Two Ys so you will be able to turn around to return back to Fremont.
All of the track has been put in up to Sunol as of this writing. I will also add industries sidings around Fremont.

This route will take me some time to complete. I plan on putting in a lot of scenic detail in this route. I will work on the Niles Canyon Part of the route first then I will work on the Fremont section. Here are some beginning screen Shots.

Does this mean that one can't include their own custom scenery items in a published route?

I generally make my own stuff including track, but I do use Kuju terrain textures at times, and Scaleroad.

Yes that is not allowed in the DTG Workshop. No third party assets. However you can post it here in the library with no problems.

Like Buzz said you can always post your routes here in the library. And i have several of them in the route library.
But I have always wanted to post a route in DTGs Workshop. So there rules only allows for only Payware routes that they supply. There are other routes that would be nice to use. But if it is not in the store section for routes. Then it will not let you post in the Workshop when you try to upload your route.

So this is the reason I am not using any freeware or third party assets for this new route that I am making.
Scale rail track would be nice to use but that is third party assets.

The Workshop rule is easy to follow. No assets allowed that are not part of any DLC released by DTG
If you stay with assets from your four routes you mention above, without placing a single tree or grass from other 3rd party assets, you will be fine.
The difference between posting here or in the Workshop is freedom to use what you wish.

You can also make a Workshop version and later improve it with third party assets and publish the additions here (more or less what you did with the Extension).

Here is a small video of my scenery progress. I am working on the Canyon scenery now. I am hoping to have the Canyon portion of the Scenery finished by the end of Summer. At least this is my goal I will see how my progress comes along.

I am going with a friend of mine to take a train ride on the Niles Canyon Railway next Sunday. I will make videos and take pictures while I ride on the train. This should help me a lot. I have seen many YouTube videos of the Niles Canyon Railway. But being there in person is better.

Here is a little update on the route. The Town of Niles is almost complete. I haven't done any scenery work on the Union Pacific side of the Canyon yet. This is my next area to work on. Here are some screen shots and a video of my progress so far.

I went to Niles Canyon Railway on Sunday and took the train Ride. I had a lot of fun and it helped with making this route.
Here are a few screen shots after I made a few changes.
