Downloading USGS Terrain Info

Unread postby kcs_fan » Thu Apr 02, 2015 10:58 am

I guess I waited too long to get into route building. The USGS site has changed. Has anyone come up with an updated tutorial on how to get terrain data into TS 2015??? !*hp*!

Which tutorial were you using?

I just tool a peek at the usgs map viewer on my phone and it appears the same as it has for the last few years.

I was using imnew's 2012 tutorial, but on the USGS site, there are no more 1/9 arc choices, if that makes any sense to any of you. I am way over my head here, so y'all try to tolerate me.

If you find a site with 1/3 and 1/9 arc second files - ready to download - for the US, please, share it with everyone.....
All I can locate are 1 arc second files modified with some 1/3 and 1/9 hole fillers...

(P.S. I bookmarked the links above....)

The tutorial by bnsfsubdivision / searchlights simulations is the most current, and best one in my opinion. Without ReDem, TS2015 can only handle 1 arc/second files (one .hgt file for each lat/long grid square). The first tutorial covers this process, and it is quite quick and easy. The second tutorial is meant for use with ReDem, and ArcGIS, or QGIS. This is a little more complicated, but will allow you to use 1/3 or 1/9 arc/second DEM. Both tutorials are oriented around the current USGS national map viewer site.

I couldn't find links to his original uploads of the tutorials, so I uploaded them to my dropbox.

1 arc/second tutorial (easy)

1/3 or 1/9 arc second for use with ReDem and a GIS program

I used the second tutorial with ReDem and QGIS to create my Siskiyou route. I used the data from the USGS site, and was quite pleased with it.
