Yes, but I'm worried about the download size. The current download size for a GridFloat chunk is about 360MB depending on the area. This is ridiculous, because I have to download at least 6 chunks to get my full terrain and converting it in an BIL does not make the size better.

I I'm VERY new to all this. I want to try and build a route from Albany NY to Montreal QC. I have to admit, all the stuff in this thread is rather intimidating. !**conf**! Will it be possible, for me to obtain terrain data from New York State, and terrain data from Canada, and put them in the same route? The Canadian version of the map viewer, sounds plagued to me, based on what I'm reading from TheCanadaianRail.

Marc, hope you don't mind but I used your instructions and expanded a bit for this method. Here is the text version, am working on a .pdf to upload here (can't attach, too big)

1. Go to the National Viewer page: http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/.
2. Zoom to an area encompassing the sections you wish to download (Tip: double left-click your mouse pointed at the area you're interested in until you reach the desired extent).
3. Click on the "Download Data" button in the upper-right of the viewer.
4. Drop down the list in the popup window labeled "Download options", select either Index 24K for smaller areas, Index 100K for larger.
5. You will now see green lines on the map which relate to the areas shown on 24K or 100K Topo maps.

6. Click in one of the boxes bounded by the green lines. You have now selected that area to download. Continue until all of your areas are selected. Notice how each section is now highlighted.
2.jpg

7. In the results pane on the left, click Download for each reference area and continue with the steps below.
8. From the new popup, check the box for "Elevation" and from the drop down menu to the right select "BIL_16INT" and click the "Next" button.
3.jpg

9. In the next window, select from the available packages and click "Next".

10. You will now see the area you selected in the Cart tab. Notice how the area I selected is now outlined in red.

I did not, as all the steps were outlined in the string of postings. I think it is all changing soon anyway, looks to be away from .BIL downloads.

You're kidding. Is the data between Albany and Montreal, something that I can download in one day? Is the change going to affect what I download, after it's in the world editor?

You should be able to. I am trying to get into the National Map to have a look at your area and it is having issues, at least from where I am trying to access it from. May have to try it later from home.

I was able to get in, looks like you can get the terrain up to the south side of Montreal. Did not go any further than my screenshot below though.

It is possible to obtain either american or canadian data (within a day) and import them into the sim. I'm already writing a pdf tutorial that covers all the require steps to get the terrain without ReDem into the simulator and will also include the steps for canadian dem's and the the new changes to the usgs seamless map viewer.

Can I mix 1/9 and 1/3 data? Here is my e-mail receipt. Do these items look right?

It's not working. I'm following Imnew's tutorial. Here is what the 1/3 data looked like when it downloaded. I extracted it and everything. When I try and convert it to HGT data with BILxSRTM, nothing happens. There is no BIL. file. Can someone else please download the terrain data for me? I need it to follow the tracks from Rennsselaer NY (Station) to Montreal QC. Or, can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

*!embar*! I have been trying for two days with the same results! The only down load that would work was around Sacramento Ca.at 1/9. All of the 1/3 to the north around Quincy Ca. and to the west to Oroville Ca. were a bust. The 1/9th that worked took 5 min. to down load, and the 1/3 was taking up to 1hr.+ and did not contain a .bil! Happy New Year to all KenC.

If you can muscle your way into the trainsim.com forums, there is a thread about a change that will be taking place, and why fownloads may be deprived of .bil files.
