Continental drift?

Unread postby RAILSOHIO » Sun Feb 08, 2026 3:20 pm

A few months ago I started a new route based in Ohio. I did some basic trackwork using the overlay. I decided to do some more work on it today. Fire up the overlay, and the tracks are off by 3 or 4 feet. We have talked about this before, but does the geo -referencing on Earth really change?

Hi, the short answer is yes: the overlays can't be fully relied on.

Part of it may be because of the ancient mapmakers' trouble of how to best project a round shape on a flat piece of paper (or screen) which also affects train sims.

There are also minor differences between the picture sets themselves: this can be most often observed where picture sets from different flyovers meet up -- or rather, sometimes don't quite meet up, with a road or track suddenly shifted a few meters sideways where the new picture set starts.

Sometimes there are also things off on the images themselves, like where a road or track that is perfectly straight in the real world suddenly has "wiggles" in it on the pictures.
