DEM data won't generate

Unread postby SAR704 » Sun May 01, 2016 11:23 pm

I've just made set up a route with RW tools, and created it in TS, and I go to generate the terrain, and all I see is a flat pool table.

I don't really want to create the terrain manually, as I'd much prefer accurate elevation for my route. The original MSTS version did not have DEM data (it was started before this became common place). I've tried downloading data in batches from http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org, as well as https://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1 ... Australia/

Does anyone have any suggestions to get the terrain to generate? Could it be dodgy files, or something with TS?

Could you expand upon what you are doing when you "go to generate the terrain"?

I go to the icon which you click on to bring up the import DEM option. I've set it to the Railworks/DEM/SRTM folder as default. I then try to have it generated (I click 'import dem', SRTM format), and nothing happens.

The start point for the route (where TS loads it) is at approximately lat -32.925778 and long 151.772125 if this is of any help. It's right at the coast more or less.

Using that method, you need to have your 1 arc/second DEM data in .hgt format files. Can you confirm if this is the case?

The SRTM data for any given region is offset just a bit (accurate, just that the boundaries aren't what you might expect). You should try downloading surrounding areas to ensure you have all boundaries covered for your project.

The file is downloaded in HGT format. It's 2.818 MB in total, like all of the ones surrounding this area supposedly. I just open the zip, and copy it to the SRTM folder. I think this may be 3 ARC per second

This is exactly what I have done to try and generate the DEM data -

- Looked up sources for the area
- Downloaded from http://viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html
- Extracted all the files to the Railworks/DEM/SRTM folder
- Load TS, open the world editor, clicked Import on the left flyout menu
- Bring up the window, select the area (usually 19 x 19, select format (SRTM)
- Click Import Terrain DEM

And a flat pool table appears in front of me...

I have downloaded data for areas that are 200+ kms away from the start point, and tried generating terrain with no success. Could it be faulty files?

Just curious, what would you suggest for the long/lat I mentioned in the above post?

What is the lat/lon as written in the RouteProperties.xml?

Copied from RW tools -

<Origin>
<sGeoPosition>
<Lat d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="F8E0B54B1BF96240" d:precision="string">151.785</Lat>
<Long d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="4E0AF31E677640C0" d:precision="string">-32.925</Long>
</sGeoPosition>
</Origin>

Also, perhaps I should note that I rotated the object which specifies where the route loads, so as to face what should be a rural city at some point, instead of the ocean. It faces west.

Your values are reversed. Newcastle, AU should be:

Lat: -32.925000
Lon: 151.785000

Which would place the world center just North of the shore.

Lat: -32.926777
Lon: 151.784434

Places the center over the depot.

Thanks for pointing that out. I only just noticed after checking the long lat myself. It's probably related to the GE lat/long being the reverse of how it's listed in the RW tools direct route setup.

Anyhow, fixed now. Terrain generates normally.
