TS crashes whilst creating distant terrain. (Is this a common error)

Unread postby SAR704 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 9:50 am

Not sure if this is a common issue, but could anyone tell me why I'm getting a message saying saved file to dump, when the black windows appear on the screen showing data, after terrain is created?

Haven't seen this before as far as I can remember.

There's also an issue where TS is crashing when jumping to certain markers. But doesn't crash when jumping to some others. This game can be so weird....

This is very odd, but i referenced the routeproperties XML to a terrain blueprint from another route, (modified to reference the new terrain texture for my currrent route) and the route loads without any issues.

I clicked on the route in the right hand tab and then disabled it, and only enabled the assets from the faulty blueprint (the ones for the new route) and now it's jumping to that dreaded marker file without crashing. I just recreated the distant terrain, and it didn't crash. Who knows what I did right

But now that I've set the blueprint to the new texturing xml, it's doing that crash again, despite it being exactly the same texture.

This is a common error. This tool is quite finicky. Here are some things I have run into ...

1. You must be at the 0,0 tile when you generate distant terrain.

2. You must have enough extra terrain tiles around the perimeter or it will crash. I am not sure what is enough, perhaps about 10km of terrain around the 0,0 tile at least.

3. Your terrain texture blueprint must be in good shape, with all terrain textures linking to proper texture files. Ensure there are no broken links here.

4. Also it may be sensitive to linking to terrain textures that are in another provider/product folder. I haven't investigated this fully, but I mention it because this seemed to fix a problem I was having once.

5. If you are using seasonal terrain textures, you must run the distant terrain tool for each season.

Thanks for the advice so far.

It seems to me as though my current texture exports must be faulty. TS seems to crash at any chance it gets when moving around the route. The blueprint consists of a single texture in the terrain folder. When I have it set to the Kuju folder, you can roam around, jump to any marker you want (even if it's the distance from here to Pluto), and things will be stable.

But if I try to move more than a certain number of metres with the blueprint that I've exported referenced, it will crash. What is the trick to exporting a healthy terrain texture into the sim that deprives TS of the opportunity to do that crash?

Just wondering, are there any detail by detail guides to this that explain how to prevent the dreaded crashes?

Just for the record, this is what I do when I create a new texture.

Create the image (512 x 512) in Paint Shop Pro

Save the image as a tga or tif file (for RWace)

Convert the image to ACE and place it in the grass folder in the Route's source folder.

Create a new Terrain Texture Blueprint and name it Texturing.xml

Export with the default values, with the only necessary fields filled in (no procedural flora)

Update any other related blueprints to get the texture recognised in the game using RW Tools.

What am I doing wrong here? Whatever the problem is, it's causing TS to crash when jumping to markers (after DEM terrain is generated, and it also crashes whilst generating distant terrain. Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated
