Weathering

This just crossed my mind.
Each asset could have two texture slots: "New" and "Weathered".
The asset builder would provide both, and players, route builders and scenario builders would have a checkbox for choosing.

This would be a neat idea to bring forward to one of the DTG representatives here like Matt P, or Derek. :D

They won't do it. The licensing they do makes it so they represent the company is best form.

BNSFdude is completely right. With all of that money changing hands. DTG producing an old grimey filthy poorly looked after paint scheme on one of their locomotives would easily result in those companies pulling the plug on the license agreements. Paint schemes are a railroad's rolling billboard and advertisement. You don't want to be covering them with dirt all of the time if you want to stay on good terms.

Right. Like these guys have all new just painted locos. Someone needs to tell these lawyer drones to get a life. I have a message for DTG. Just put out generic stuff and let us free ware guys paint all the figging railroads and these dolts don't get anything in royalties or whatever you call this ransom.

I understand the licensing constraint, but a weathered texture would not be mandatory. DTG could avoid using it, making railroads happy. Then 3rd-party repainters could step in to provide it.

That would be great except the generic commuter stuff they did put out can't be repainted. So they would have to make it end-user friendly too.

You shouldn't say "can't". Try difficult. A lot of this mirrored crap can be overcome with the use of decals which only a few know how to do however us slower guys are finally unlocking some of these mysteries.

Yea the decals baffle me too. I think it needs a separate geo file and but I don't know how they work. I guess I could look into it
