Completely useless thread, but I do notice several posters from other boards making an appearance here.

Trainz/TANE is probably the easiest program for layout building and perhaps creating a route if you're a newbie, but graphics and simulation wise it is certainly not the best, the supplied default content is not even close IMO.

I do hope most sincerely that TSW is not going down the TANE road of endless service packs, hotfixes, more hotfixes and still being full of errors

Given the constant Engine development and the significant improvements by Epic you should expect there will TSW upgrades, though maybe not as bad as the situations you've outlined. I'd think that DTG would more than willing to take advantage of anything that will improve game performance and/or add enhancements that benefit but them and their customer base.

And just in case you missed the latest stream, here's some detail on the new sound engine..quite useful when thinking of steam in TSW. > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErejaBCicds <

Not really having a go Trevor. There is quite a bit of interest to see how the new DTG product goes up against TANE and healthy competition in the market keeps developers on their toes and a variety of interesting products for the consumer to try.

TANE is a pretty good simulator if you know how to create the sessions, same if you know how to create scenarios in TS2017. A lot of the newer items have great physics, there is actually engine failure possible. RW & TSW both look better, but some of these guys do magic on their routes and they look very good. Building in TANE is easy, but if you want it to look nice, you work just as hard as in TS2017. It is hard cause you want it nice. So there is no reason for anyone to trash TANE. I have 3500 hours in it, only thing I have not done is paint some rolling stock and I do not believe I am even going to. There is so much free stuff already painted its a why bother.

I am waiting to see TSW at the moment and what all of you are going to say about it. Don't forget you only get 2 hours to preview before you can get your money back.

There is certainly room for a few good train simulators.
And well designed models can be exported to different simulators.

Crosstie Studio's http://crosstiestudios.com plans to do a UE4 based Trainz have fallen along the wayside?

Zusi's newest professional German train simulator is not meant for release to the general public it seems.
ZD Simulator from Russia seems to have gone belly up.
EEP is a closed system MSTS kind of model railroad simulator.

So that leaves TS17, TSW, Trainz12, TANE, MSTS and Open Rails for simulators with a wide user base.

OpenBVE I have never tried, and there might be other sims still unknown to many of us.

Different strokes I guess. I am still so fascinated with the many different parts of TS2xxx that I have never had the urge to explore other sims. The more I increase my knowledge here the more my enjoyment increases but like I said different strokes.

Bob, I am in the same boat as you. I love TSW, TANE, Run8, and TS17.
All have their appeal.

I have Run8 also but have not given it a chance yet, no time. I was looking at Version 2, almost bought it, but decided to wait especially with TSW hitting the market today. I don't want 2 new sims at the same time.

Version 2 is definitely better, the devs have improved a lot of things. The outside graphics still don't compare to the competition, but when viewed from the cab are OK.

The fully populated 'world in real time' type scenarios are wonderful and a good substitute for multiplayer when you try to learn to dispatch or drive a train properly.

Run8v2 is the touchstone when it comes to proper railroad simulation.

But the devs team is less than a handful of people, so progress towards new routes and trains is slow.

I was pleasantly surprised by Version 2. John worked really hard to improve many aspects of the sim, and should be commended. As Edwin says, the graphics don't compare to the competition, but Version 2 is a noticeable improvement over Version 1.

The up-side of the development team being small is when they do issue new products, it's good to go. Also, they listen to the community about what needs to be fixed.
