It's their business, and they have to run it as they see fit. I do feel their statement is one of those unenforceable "lines in the sand". If someone wants to distribute a repaint, there are many of doing it outside of forums like this. A better statement from them would be "repaints are not supported by RRmods under any circumstances". If you repaint and break the model, it's on you to figure out how to fix it. That seems more enforceable to me.

Besides, RRmods can mitigate the rogue repaints by offering specific railroad detailed models at a more affordable price... say in the $10 range. I purchased this unit just to see the quality level, and I have to say I have no buyer's regret. Rrmods did a nice job on the model. But I do feel they need to work on their pricing.

Hey guys, we didn't mean to come off brash and you guys are more than welcome to make your own personal repaints. However, we simply don't allow you to distribute them. Reason being it doesn't fit our business model. Our aim is to model the prototypical differences that each railroad had. I myself love repainting railcars/locomotives. However, if someone were to repaint our Gp40-2 in a Conrail and distribute the skin and later we release our prototypical conrail Gp40-2 then who would purchase it? This would cripple our model and put us out as it has others in the past from the Trainz side. This policy gives us the breath of life to continue as it has done since 2004.

Sincerely, I appreciate your business and support.

I do understand your point here. Your business model is different that most of the other content creators and that is what is generating the blowback. So as others have suggested how about creating a reskin pack of two or three versions at an attractive price. You would still need to own the original to use them.

I appreciate that your statement doesn't have the tone of, "because we say so!" and I understand your position otoh variety is so nice *!!wink!!*

Hopefully with the model itself done official repaints can be released with some frequency?

What would be the reason why I would do a repaint or any other work with my hobby, that takes time and not being able to distribute it to my friends.

No thanks. This is why I am not buying any more TSW DLC´s

See that I am not discussing here, quality of model, functionality, sounds (the soul that makes this engine perfect) or the price.

I wonder what knowledge have you learned from others, that have been in train simulator for years before you, or knowledge that has been shared in the RWA forums by experts. **!!bang!!**

I was tempted ....

On thinking this over, I don't want to support the Trainz business model of both Jointed Rail and RRMods.
Each variation or paint scheme its own full price purchase represents too little value for money for my wallet.

Sorry guys, no purchase from me.

How about BNSF licensing when much more desirable Santa Fe locomotives might become available?

Wow guys,
At this point, I hope you don't completely drive RRMods out of Railworks all together. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Don't have to bitch and moan about someones business model. Get out there and do it yourselves if you have a better way or better product, seriously... This thread is embarrassing to read as a RMA memeber.

!!bang!! !!spank!!

RRMods,
Thank you for the amazing quality of models you produce! While it is a bummer they can't be repainted for public freeware use, the quality is worth it. *!!thnx!!*

I would rather they be driven out if that's what is necessary to avoid normalizing repaint bans. This community wouldn't exist if it wasn't for all the modders. Choking off modding will kill the hobby if it becomes widespread. Just look at the general lack of interest in TSW; a lot of that is because it's impossible to make our own content for it.

Strange, I'm a member and I'm not embarrassed at all.

Nobody questions the quality of the model. Not even the right of RRMods to apply whatever business practice they want.
The flip side of the coin is that we have the right to disagree with the business practice, and the right to say so, and in the end the customer votes with his feet.

The main problem with this business practice, by the way, is that it flies in the face of what we do as a community: share, collaborate, etc.

My feeling is, if DTG adopted this practice, the community would go nuclear on them.

I can't speak for RRMODs, but there is another reason for prohibiting repaints. I call it "The Hyland Rule". If you allow repaints, then you are basically implying that you are going to support anyone who decides to do one.
Then, when you don't hold their hands because they have no artistic talent and can't figure out the processes, you get called an unhelpful smart-ass and get threatened with complaints on yak-forums and even false accusations of inferior products to your payment provider. In my case, it went from offering repaint kits and full permission with some releases to saying "hell no, dont even ask!".

I don't necessarily agree with the "it will hurt my future business" excuse, as that has not been the issue in my case. But while I wouldn't expressly forbid repaints, i'd never offer any support for it again.

That is a stance which I think RRmods might have to change to if they want to succeed in RW.

I bought the engine. I really like it, it's fantastic and one of the best out there. Would I buy it again at full price for a repaint? Absolutely not. I might pay 3-5 bucks for a repaint if it's modified specifically for the repaint, but I for sure won't pay full price for it again. So already their excuse of they'll lose business, while I can understand their thinking, is rendered moot because I won't buy it again.

I have bought locomotives in the past, purely for repaints or modifications in the file library here, so to me, they probably would gain sales if they let people repaint them.

I can see the carry-over of the policy from the Trainz side, as one cannot easily remove a mesh file and re-insert it on the flip side of a download. The main download site won't accept incomplete files either, so it would have to be done on a 3rd party website. It is possible, but it could be overwhelming to the average Trainz user, and is full of potential risk to devs as someone could slip the core files through easily in the CDP files without the dev's knowledge, thus distributing the payware equipment freely. I can see why Trainz payware devs are skittish about it, to say the least.

In the case of Railworks there are very few users (at least, those who visit here) who haven't copied geo files over, and all the reputable community sites make sure no files get through that shouldn't.

Also, I may be alone in this, but I have purchased payware add ons because of a free repaint that I really wanted, even if I had little interest in the core pack.

We in the community do what we can to keep things civil Jerry but sometimes the jack wagons just run loose for a short period. Eventually they always cut themselves from the pack.
