PORTAL TO PORTAL

Unread postby oakpalms » Wed May 17, 2017 9:09 am

When making a Scenario is it possible to have the player train enter the scenario at the portal at say the east end and then end the scenario by exiting the portal at the west end? I am reading about trains leaving the game via portals, but I have yet to see any comment about whether a portal can be used as the Start Point for a scenario. I would like to do scenarios that allow for passenger trains to approach the first station along its path instead of the game starting as a dead stop at that station. Thanks for your advice.

Portals are only for AI trains to appear and disappear into.

Also, you can create a scenario with the train in motion - you would simply need to pick a start point prior to the passenger station, and set the speeds accordingly.

There's a couple notes to this though - Make sure it's the last thing you do. Otherwise, any tasks you add afterwards will not show up properly, and you'll need to delete the rolling start files manually from the scenario folder.

I don't see how a scenario for a passenger train to begin approaching the first station on a route can take place since there is no name for the track that starts from the end of track until usually the name for the mainline track is given that connects to the station itself. It is too bad, at least as far as I have been able to discover, that one can't simply pick a point of track with the mouse to select that section of track (like can be done in MSTS) in order to start a train's path. Even the rolling train as suggested would have the train starting on the same track as the station as I have discovered using the Marias Pass and Shelby station. Why don't route makers have a named section of track that is a few miles before entering the first city or yard that is a part of the game? They have portals at both ends of track from where AI trains can be started, but they don't have named pieces of track that go to the end of track from which player trains could be started.

Maybe I am missing something with RWs. Please share any thoughts on how to start player trains just inside the end of track.

This isn't exactly a reply to your whole post, but it's always possible to start any train on a track marker: simply place the marker (I would use a "destination" marker even though that doesn't seem logical, but a "siding" marker will work just as well) first and then the train. The only instance in which doing this might become useful is if the train in question is AI and there's a risk that the "dispatcher" could send it in the wrong direction; yes, I've had this happen. Individual track sections do not have automatically generated "names" because there's no need for that in TS, by the way.

Yes, the thing you are missing is that you can add track markers at the scenario level in the scenario editor.
These won't be part of the route, they will be loaded with your scenario. You can also load some visible objects and lighting effects this way.
By convention, scenario-level track markers are usually identified with a S letter in the name, such as "(S) reverse point".

I've always been in the habit of deleting the "(S)" from the scenarios I write as I go along. Why? Personal aesthetics, I guess.
