Someone uploaded this file to the site. They left no name, no handle, no description and no title and the file is not zipped and has no readme in it. What am I supposed to do with it?

If you are going to upload to the site you need to follow these instructions.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8112

Otherwise I can not post the file.

If it didn't follow the rules, then delete it. I don't see the issue. Pretty clear cut. I didn't know you could upload a file without being a member.

It was a suggestion.... not an order. He put it out there publicly and I publicly suggested what I thought should be done. He did ask the question of what is he supposed to do.

I told him. You don't like what I suggested then make your own suggestion instead of attacking mine.

I hate to throw away files and figured it was someone from here. I hate to waste people's work. Yes anyone can upload a file, I got another the other day full of illegal geo files from a non member. That one I threw away.

This is why you and I have problems occasionally. I'm sure Bob doesn't need any help managing the forum. What he was looking for was this person to step forward so he could post the submission to the library and at the same time explain a little of what he needs to do so for everyone.

Bob is a big boy. If he has a problem with what I said then let him say it. You don't have to assume you need to speak on his behalf.

To artimrj......

I suggest you keep uploads to MEMBERS ONLY. Allowing some complete stranger (not a member) to do a drive by upload is just asking for trouble. At least with a member, you have some bit of information (be it a lie or not) which is better than NO information on the uploader at all. Then you wouldn't have to make a public thread asking. !!*ok*!!

To keep the site for members only would require everyone to log in. I was trying to keep things simple and not give you another log in. Then I would have to deal with spammers trying to sign up. Like the battle I am fighting in the forums. If I unlock the forums, we will have 10,000 users by the end of the week. I do not want that happening on the site. I may request that anyone wanting to upload to sign in though, still working things out in my mind.

Well you keep the forum visible to non-members and require them to be logged in if they want to post and/or upload files. Uploading is just posting on a forum too....only it's a file and not a body of text. You allow downloading without a login so that someone who just wants a file, doesn't have to signup. An uploader can send a virus or illegal files. The only trouble a downloader can be is in the bandwidth department. Otherwise they are harmless.

So ..... membership to post and upload.....no membership to view and download.

At least that's my ... **!!2cents!!**

Actually no, the forums are using phpBB while the web site and file library are on Joomla.

You are right about the danger of public uploading, but this is why Bob screens all uploads.

I agree. There's no point for members for uploads. Its best to keep the uploads filtered from spams. Trust me I hate spammers too. Nothing but ignorant maniacs trying to ruin everything Image!!!!!

Well I suppose since uploads are so infrequent, it can be handled as it currently is. I forgot about the two different software for the forums and the website. I would just tell people that if the upload doesn't follow the rules, it won't be posted for download. Simple enough. :D
