WARNING steam update

Before verify of cache I always check for steam update. As I was reading about the update steam was downloading a new update. There was a warning about incompatability of the update and anti virus programs. Before I could get to the anti virus program to disable, the update had started and FAILED. I NOW HAVE NO ACCESS TO STEAM.

Luckily I had a Railworks shortcut on the desktop. Disabled anti virus and started Railworks from the shortcut. Steam files installed and now able to access steam.

Your desktop shortcut probably launches this:
steam://rungameid/24010

So it uses Steam anyway.
What happened is your Steam client interface was broken.

Most likely. But.. steam shold have given the option to stop the download until the user had a chance to disable the anti virus before continuing.

Antivirus runs on my computer all the time and has never conflicted with an update or download from Steam. The purpose of Antivirus software is to prevent viruses that come with downloads, so isn't disabling it to allow a download to occur absolutely counter-intuitive?

I agree. I wouldn't have a anti-virus that would not allow legitimate D/Ls. I have been using AVG free for seven or eight years on multiple computers and have never had a machine infected.

The issue appears to be that at least one of the antivirus programs has flagged an important file as a virus. This false positive is apparently causing a lot of headaches for Valve as they try to get it cleared from the definitions list.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows how or has the ability to allow an exception for a false positive. This is why we see the warning about shutting down our antivirus program.

I had no problems with the latest update and my antivirus was running at the time.

Me neither!

Steam has been updating alot in the pass few weeks. I haven't had any problems with my antivirus. I had Microsoft Essentials for over a year now. Never have I encountered such a problem from steam.
